My first encounter with a Ruger

Some of the older guys may relate but this would never happen today.

When I was 17 I had been working at a Gulf service station that also was a small store for two years after school. I worked hard to out perform some of the other teenagers that worked there. One night the owner had to leave early and asked be to close up and take the money bag home because he didn't want to leave it in his car at the event he had to attend. The bag had a lock on it, so it was locked. He also gave my a Ruger .22 Single Six (as he always carried it when he closed up). When I got home and told my dad that I had the money bag he was pissed! The next day he had a discussion with the owner. That was the last time I was asked to carry the money bag.

I had a very similar incident occur. When still in high school I worked evenings at a grocery store. The days cash receipts were delivered to a night depository at a bank a hundred yards away. It was delivered on foot by two of the night managers primarily for accountability. One evening I was asked to take the place of one of the night managers who was in dispose. Afterwards I mentioned it to my father and he sternly said, never again under any circumstance.
About a week later a holdup took place and the cash was stolen at gunpoint…luckily no one was hurt. A life lesson was learned…

When I was in college, I'd take the deposit to the bank on Sunday mornings. I never worried about getting robbed.

That was over forty years ago and I still have the key for the night depository.
