I took some time today to get into the woods, build a lean to, sit by a fire and so on. Along with my daypack, I chose to carry my 83XXX Mini-14 with a five round mag in the gun and a twenty round back up in my coat pocket (just because). The little carbine once more illustrated Bill Ruger's design purpose. It's much lighter than my AR, carries easier-especially with the flush mag-and more than enough accurate for a "utility carbine". Since it's stainless, the weather isn't a concern either. Great little gun, the Mini-14.

+1 Nicely said. I enjoy mine in a similar fashion from time to time. At times we don't need to get fancy; just enjoy the simple things with the utility tools that work.

The five round mags are excellent. The Mini 14 ia a fast handling little rifle, especially with the flush five rounder. After that, I prefer the 20 rounders; I think the 30's are a bit too long and awkward for the Mini.

Bill Ruger's initial intent with the Mini-14 was a down size of the M-14 model which was still pretty popular when the Mini-14 came out. A few police departments went with the Mini-14 but then the AR's got really popular, more than likely because it was the standard U.S. military arm and many veterans had already been weened on them.
If Bill Ruger had invented a Mini-14 before Stoner came out with his AR... the 2nd most popular military rifle around the world might today be the Mini-14. (the first is the AK).

Yeah the mini is a lot handier to carry than the ar. I like our 14 and 30 a lot. I killed a coyote with my mini 14 a few years ago at about 200 yards. It isn't a tack driver but will get the job done. I confess to carrying a R15 now for coyotes because of the much better accuracy; however my safe will always have a spot for the minis. TTT
