Mini 14 accuracy

This was with Federal bulk pack 55gr FMJ at 100yds with a TruGlo 5MOA dot from a bench rest. 10 shots.

My Mini was mfg'd around yr 2000 and has the older pencil style barrel. I have added an Accu-Strut barrel brace and an Amega Ranges Scout rail. Both are said to improve accuracy by making the barrel stiffer. I am not sure if that is true or not. My rifle was about this accurate before the additions, but I dont have a good picture to compare with to prove it.

The newer rifles are supposed to be better.

You wont win any benchrest matches with a Mini 14. I have owned 5 of them over the years. The one I have now, a newer 580 series gun with the bigger barrel, shoots pretty good, around 2 to 4 inches at 100 yards with open sights. What makes this Mini better than any I have owned in the past is the zero doesn't wander when the barrel heats up. My older Minis would start vertical stringing so bad that they would leave the target after the first 10 shots.

Mine is a 580-series with the thicker barrel. I put a 2-7x33 Leupold scope on it, and it consistently shoots < 1.5 MOA. I typically shoot factory ammunition, and have had good luck with the Hornady Varmint Express 55 grain load.

It is also about my favorite gun to carry around the farm, and it has been quite effective on coyotes and such.

Really depends on the quality of ammo you use.

For example handloads using unsorted brass and cheap 55 fmj bt bullets is about 4 in @ 100.

Sorted Lake City brass with a moderate charge of Re 10X and the 60 grain Nosler BT gives about 1.5 @ 100 yds.

The cheaper bullets have problems in that the cannelure is often located at different points on the bullet. I only use bullets having a cannelure and crimp these with a Lee crimp die.

My rifle is a 580 series and has a Burris Full Field 3-9X40 and is sighted in @ 100 yds. It is easy to carry and can sure spit out a stream of Nosler 60 grainers if I want to.
