Going through some old photo albums Nita had and I came across a photo from the Memphis newspaper dated Dec. 12, 1971. This was before Nita and I were married.

The photo is of me demonstrating the grip on a sixgun, posed, of course. But it was my first meeting with the old Tennessee Game And Fish Commission asking them to legalize handgun hunting for big game n Tennessee. To my surprise, I was well received and in time a committee was formed, and my proposed regulations were adopted within a year or so.

I feel sort of proud of that accomplishment.

I can relate. My scanner is old and cranky too. Last time I had to scan a document, I ended up just taking a pic of the stupid thing. Fortunately that worked well enough to satisfy whoever it was who wanted or required it.

About 10-12 years ago I did the same in Maryland. I pointed out how the ballistic justification to disqualify center fire rifles didn't apply to handguns. That many shotgun sabot slugs were saboted handgun bullets traveling at similar velocities. And that elderly, disabled and amputees would benefit from the ability to use a handgun. We eventually got it when they allowed straight walled cartridges for deer.

About 10-12 years ago I did the same in Maryland. I pointed out how the ballistic justification to disqualify center fire rifles didn't apply to handguns. That many shotgun sabot slugs were saboted handgun bullets traveling at similar velocities. And that elderly, disabled and amputees would benefit from the ability to use a handgun. We eventually got it when they allowed straight walled cartridges for deer.

Handgun hunting for deer has always been allowed in Marxland, at least as long as I've been a handgunner (over 50 years now), but IIRC there was some sort of muzzle energy minimum that ruled out everything except most .44 and .41 magnum loads and maybe a very, very few .357 loads. I forget what the minimum number was.

Handgun hunting for deer has always been allowed in Marxland, at least as long as I've been a handgunner (over 50 years now), but IIRC there was some sort of muzzle energy minimum that ruled out everything except most .44 and .41 magnum loads and maybe a very, very few .357 loads. I forget what the minimum number was.

Pretty sure that was only in counties that allowed center-fire rifles like Garrett etc. I'm in Charles previously PG where shotgun and muzzle loader only was the rule. Then in those counties you need a 6" barrel and meet energy requirements. I still can't technically use my 357sig because of the bottleneck round but can with 10mm &45. Modern 357mag and up easily meet the standard they just need to be straight walled like the rifle calibers allowed in most counties.

And well you should, Bob! Too many people will only complain about a policy that they dislike, with no effort to change things.

That was the law when I lived in Maryland - selected handguns could be used, but only in counties that allowed rifles for deer hunting - basically from Washington county on west, IIRC.
