Does anyone know the maximum outside diameter of objective bell that can be installed using the 4B/5B height Ruger factory rings on a Model 77 Hawkeye? I have a M77 Predator on the way and I just found a great deal on a 42mm (lens) scope. I would ideally like approximately .125" to .187" clearance between the barrel and bell.

Thanks for any help.

As far as I know Ruger supplies a medium height ring for the front and a high ring for the back.

This should work. If you can mount a scope lower, you can buy just one ring and that would be a low front ring then you would move the medium height (previously front) ring to the back.

If the new scope has an adjustable objective the lowest mount that will probably work is a medium front and high rear ring.

Should you ever decide to mount a 40mm non adjustible objective lens scope a low front and a medium rear work just fine. By adjustable objective -- this is an outer ring on the front of the scope that is used for focus or parallax adjustments.

I like 40mm scopes having max powers up to 16X with side focus. That way I can use low front and medium rear. The standard Ruger stock works better with lower mounted scopes.

Also another factor is the type of barrel contour and action length. For example my Weaver GS 6-20X (focus on front) fits on my .223 SA Hawkeye factory barrel with low front and medium rear rings. The same rings are not high enough for a factory barreled M77, MKII long action.

Thanks, sp. I appreciate that info. The scope I'm looking at is the Nikon Monarch with side-focus. I could find the ring height on Ruger's spec sheet, but not having the rifle in hand yet, I couldn't find any dimensions for the receiver base height. The spec sheet shows that the medium height will handle up to a 42mm objective, but not knowing total height of base + ring, I have no way to figure how much clearance I will have between bell and barrel.
Are there any issues with bolt handle clearing the ocular with a low mount?

Thanks 308. I'll remember to try the search feature next time! The link you just posted was exactly what I was looking for.

I have mounted a Zeiss Conquest (3-9X40) with a low front and medium rear with no problems with ocular (eye piece) clearance on MKII's and Haweyes. I have not measured the clearance of the objective bell but it appears to be about 1/10 inch

The side focus scope that you are looking at just might work with low front and medium rear rings. I am not familiar with the contour of the rifle barrel that is planned. I guess the only way to tell is to try it out. You only have to buy one ring and if it does not fit you can save it for another scope or rifle.
