Manual clicker at grocery store

Don’t know why I thought of this today. Does anyone remember the plastic counter with the four buttons? So you could stay in your budget at the grocery store. As a kid I was fascinated by them. We also got Green stamps from the register. And the registers had hand cranks if the power went out.

Just occurred to me, we’d need a 5 button clicker today I can’t get out of the grocery store for under $100. The way things are going the next generation will be dropping a grand at the grocery store.

Yes, we had one. Never seemed to "work".

When I was in college I estimated the cost by how full the cart was. I was pretty good at not over spending my wallet contents. Of course I wasn’t buying steak. I do remember those red clickers. I never had one but they must have been advertised a lot. Just using the 15 or less line can sometimes approach $100 these days.

Yes, when we were first married following a budget was so important! Every trip to A&P we carried ours and wife used it like our lives depended on it! :lol:

I just used the modern version yesterday. We had a lot of high expenses in the past several weeks. When I was heading out to the store to pick up some items for a big family dinner, my wife said to try to keep it under $ XX amount. I am usually pretty good at keeping a close estimate as I go along, but I got distracted and lost count. Then I couldn't recall the prices of several items in my cart. I stood there for a second and then remembered that I have that store's app on my phone. I opened it and scanned all the items in my cart, giving me an accurate total. I removed a couple of items and was at my target exactly. Actually, I went ahead and paid for it at that point since it prompted me and already had my bank card info from prior online and in store sales.
I do remember seeing the counters when I was younger and thought about getting one, but I always thought about my dad whom I never beat with an adding machine. He could always add faster in his head or on paper than me with a machine. Because of that, I have almost always done most of my math on paper or in my head, to keep those skills sharp.

I remember those things the 'stock boys' used to print the price on the cans by the lid full. clack,clack,clack,clack,etc.

I worked for Kroger in 1965 as a carry out and stockman. We used to hate Fridays because it was payday at the factory and the women would come in after work and spend up to $20 on groceries and we would load two carts to carry their groceries to the car. Now you carry $20 out yourself in your pocket.
