I had just started to undress from my 0400-0800 quarterdeck watch when the Messenger Of The Watch came below to tell me, "Ya gotta come up and relieve Furze. He just shot the O.D."
When being relieved, the outgoing watch unloads the .45 pistol, places the magazines on the quarterdeck desk, and is then free to leave. The oncoming watch enters into the log, the pistol's serial number and the number of rounds that he receives. The lad in question placed the loaded magazine into the gun, closed the slide, and while placing the gun into the holster, pulled the trigger. The emerging bullet missed his leg, but hit the deck, dislodging a chunk of non-skid paint, which struck the Officer of the Deck over the left eye, causing profuse bleeding.
Furze was removed, never to be seen again.
And I got to stand two watches, with a raggedy holster and 14 rounds of ammunition.
