Short version: 1) Thieves steal mail from USPS mailboxes (not home mailboxes, but the big blue boxes at post office locations), 2) thieves open mail, 3) thieves "wash" checks (literally wash the check in a washing machine to remove writing), 4) thieves re-write check to selves, then 5) thieves cash check for large amount, draining your account.
My takeaway: Don't mail paper checks, use electronic transfers / bill pay / bank websites.
Check your on-line bank statements frequently.
