M77 vs No 1's

Is there any difference in accuracy between the M77 and the No. 1's

That is a tough question to answer... Bolts, or single shots can be wonderfully acurate, or just plain fussy. Hunting groups, and one hole target groups are two different levels of shooting. No matter what action a person uses, the heavy barrel usually shoots better than a slender hunting barrel. Note the varmint rigs usually carry the one inch barrel.

Many a deer has been brought down with a lever action, or single shot rifle that is not capable of more than a three inch group at 100 yards. However, small varmints at long distance require much better groups, and a high dollar scope to see the target.

I do like my bolt action, but I am also fond of my number one, and both have a place in my gun safe...

I have a 77 MKII and a #1 in 25-06. They are pretty close as far as accuracy goes. The 77 has the edge simply because I had my gunsmith work the trigger, he wont touch a #1, and its better crisper and a tad lighter than the #1. They each like different loads and its close as to which one shoots better. Either would take a deer at 200 yards no problem.

My #1 in 6mm Rem is a tack driver and I took a nice deer at 80 yards with it this year. I have 4 other 77's, 3 are full stock models, and all are great shooters. Actually, I have let 3 other 77's and another #1 slip through my hands and they were all very accurate. With the right handloads, good triggers and optics any Ruger rifle I have ever owned was a 100 yard MOA shooter. I like them both, my experience says they are pretty even.

My experience with No1s is hit or miss. I have a bunch of 77Vs and found all of them to be exceptionally accurate, even my PITA 25.06 after some load tweaking. I think the 77V has the much better trigger, that helps. As does a free floating barrel and broad, flat forend.

I'd suppose the No1 can be made to shoot as accurate as a 77V, I just bought a 220 Swift No1 with that hope in mind. But overall, were I to buy one for target shooting I suppose I'd go with the 77V.

even old beater #1s can shoot...not a custom barrel but a takeoff 204 Ruger refit to an older action.
If I had to have a strictly benchrest target gun I would likely go with a bolt gun tho...jus sayin

I have a No. 1 in .243 and a M77 in .220 Swift. Both rifles will shoot inside a half inch at 100 yards all day long. I used them in Virginia when I lived there to shoot woodchucks. The Swift will reach out and touch quite a bit further than the .243 however.

I did use the .243 for Whitetail deer, but the round was too fast and kept ruining too much meat. Now I use my 7x57 No. 1.

I do hand load all my ammunition and have tuned all my rifles as well.

I have and love both and it is more the individual rifle not the type. I would mention it may take more practice to load the No. 1 fast, but it can be done with practice.
