Seems like that is the hard way to make a semi-automatic rifle. Sure just add a cylinder and piston on the side of a bolt-action rifle with a bunch of levers and brackets for the action and some protection for the shooter an wha la. What's next a semi-automatic lever-action rifle. I have actually thought about that one also.

I believe Browning's early experiments were based on the Model 92 Winchester, both for recoil operated and gas operated semi-auto rifles.
