I hike in the mountains almost every day and had carried my Blackhawk 45 until I decided it was too conspicuous and too heavy. I replaced it over a year ago with the LCP 380 and love it. I've read that the major problem with most semi-autos occurs when chambering the first round. My question is can I chamber the first round and keep it cocked indefinitely or do I need to reload the first round before each hike? Will I damage the spring by keeping it cocked for weeks at a time? Thank you.

I've had mine for a few years now & kept one in the pipe ready to go + 2-magazines, fully load at all time except after I shoot it empty & when I field-strip/clean it & I have had no problems...I take that back...Pro-Mag magazines are a p o s!

My assumption is you have the LCP.

Insert a loaded magazine and slingshot the slide to load a round in the chamber. Remove the magazine and load another round in the mag and reinsert the mag.

You now have six rounds in the mag and one in the chamber and a LCP that is NOT cocked, but is ready for action.

I suggest you carefully read the manual that came with the LCP. The LCP is not cocked.

Thanks to JumpmasterC for the answer to the question. And Trucker for the lesson in semantics.

What about safety? I have followed the Army system with my sidearms. Loaded and read when carried, empty and secured (Locked up) when not carried.

You're welcome and I repeat my suggestion: Carefully read the manual that came with the LCP. It explains it all ... including semantics.

The theory of the LCP is that the half cock and extremely long trigger pull act as the safety yet make the pistol immediately ready for action. Kudude

It seems to me that the newer version of the LCP, that with the improved sights and shorter trigger is more "cocked" than the original version. The hammer seems to be pre-set approximately a full hammer-width further back than the original version. It is still not fully cocked but is more "pre-set". Or so it appears.

I have a handful of good safes at my place, firearms are either locked up or under my physical control! ALL my guns are loaded, ready to go, my flashlights are stored WITH good batteries in them too, kind of defeats the purpose not to!
