LC9 recommended carry ammo

Hello all,
First post to the Ruger forum but,not a stranger been lurking for a while. Anyway,I am mostly a rifle shooter but,picked up a new Ruger LC9 last weekend and put 25 rnds of ww box 115gr fmj and another 25 rnds of magtech 124gr in a super short range session.
Little pistol shot really well,no malfunction and seemed to shoot POA/POI at 7 yards. The DAO trigger is a little tuff but,managable.
My question is what would you folks recommend for a defensive carry rnd JHP and what wieght 115,124 or 147.

I carry with WW 147gr HP (non +p) in my LC9. It functions well and fires to point of aim, no fail to feed or fire issues.

shoot straight and shoot often.

I bought 6, 25 round box's of Hornady 90252 9mm Luger 115 Grain JHP/XTP from Man Venture Outpost.. No problems what so ever with about 100 rounds, 50 of that or so, rapid fire.. With shipping and all, came to about $16.11 a box, came in 4 days.. Ordering some more today now that I know it's flawless in my lc9.. Great price as well..

As personal defence is a close quarters proposition, and I want the biggest impact possible in a critical situation, I went with Hornady Critical Duty 135 grain 9mm+P. Mind you, that's in an SR9, and in a pocket pistol like the LC9 I'd possibly go with the same bullet but in a standard, non +P loading...after shooting it I'd decide if it was a bit of a handful in the LC9. Of course, in Canada the SR9 is the smallest pistol allowed, so that won't be an issue.

Just remember, that ammo stops for nothing and goes right through walls, steel, glass, by-standers, etc.

I need to buy some Critical Defense for my LCR. Currently load it with Remington 38 +P 125grain semi-jktd hollow points. In Critical Defense I may look for a heavier grain and skip the +P. A heavy, slow bullet sounds good for carry. Thoughts?

Hi Ptroxx, Ruger states that the LC9 CAN handle +P ammunition, but also states that a steady diet of +P ammunition will shorten the pistol's service life. So, it sounds like getting a box of +P personal defence ammo, shooting a few rounds to make sure you can shoot it well, and then carrying it for defense is the way to go...and shooting standard 9mm at the range. Though Ruger states that the SR9 is rated for 9mm, 9mm +P, and 9mm +P+, with no caveats, they state clearly DO NOT use 9mm +P+ ammunition in an LC9!!

My favorite ammo for the LC9 is .357 Mag 125 gr FTX® Critical Defense® :)

Ok I am being a smart ass. I love my new LC9 but I am used to my .357 mag/38 sp revolver with a 4 inch barrel. I love the wild punch of that huge powder load in the .357. It hurts the hand to shoot it but I am pretty sure the guy who gets shot with it is going to be hurting a lot more.

I don't have a concealed carry permit but I am in Utah (where open carry is legal) and I will have my CC soon, and then I will be remembering the ammo in this thread when I start carrying.

I worry a bit about carrying exotic rounds in my personal defense weapon. I think about someone being able to take my weapon and use it on me, and I sure wouldn't want to be shot with some of this stuff :-) Yeah, I know that if someone gets your gun, it should be empty by then, but things don't always go as planned. Call it old age, or whatever you want, I just try to look at things a bit more realistically than when I was young and had plenty of lead in my pencil!
