Description
This is a heavy, very solid hunting knife in sort of a Bowie pattern. The blade is marked “Bora” and "Stainless Steel." I bought it in the late 1990s in Turkey, but I have no idea where it was made.
The blade is .186” thick, with a hollow grind and very nice edge. It’s quite sharp. As you can see, it has a brass guard, two thick brass rivets, and full tang construction with a bit of the tang exposed for a lanyard hole. The grips are some kind of hardwood (walnut, perhaps?), nothing exotic, but they’re nicely finished.
Overall length is 10.25", with a 5.75” blade (5.2” cutting edge).
One of the handle scales has a thin crack that goes from a rivet hole to the scale’s edge. It was there when I bought the knife, and it has not changed in 17 or 18 years (it's not opening up or loosening).
There’s a dark gray leather sheath that’s perfectly functional, but kind of ugly. If I were keeping the knife, I’d probably make a better one. When the knife sits for a long time in the sheath, the brass guard will develop verdigris corrosion where it contacts the leather. It is easily polished off and probably would not appear at all when the knife is being carried and used—I’m sure this is a common phenomenon for any knife with brass pieces.
This knife would be great for stabbing or drilling, good for slicing, and adequate for chopping tasks. It would also work for skinning large animals, I believe, and would be one heck of a heavy duty whittler. I’ve never used it, mainly because I’m not a hunter and I find it too big for everyday carry.
I’d like to get $60 for it, so I’ll ask $70 shipped in the U.S… A face to face sale in northern Utah would be fine, too.
