Lapping In Scope Rings

I've done it to all the scopes I've mounted, You can see where the finish is removed so that all the metal of the rings will contact the scope.
The hardest scope to keep from moving in the mounts I had was an RWS spring air rifle. Once I lapped the rings & put a strip of tape around the scope, the thing finally stayed in place.
I figure even pressure around the scope tube can't be a bad thing.

It does make a difference and works well to boot. No more scope pinch...cleans the rings up as well. Have done it to MANY sets of rings and have done so on ALL my Ruger rings regardless of caliber. My gunsmith buddy does an excellent job doing so as well.

Chuck Smith

I bought the lapping tool & abrasive paste from Brownell's and followed the directions. Which is basically moving the tool back and forth and rotating until the rings appear to have the high spots knocked off. Making sure the rings are aligned is important too. They sell a tool for that, but I've used the lapping tool to eye up the alignment.
