John N. Mitchell's Silver Star

In doing an internet search for "corrupt U.S. Attorney General." I came across John N. Mitchell, Nixon's good friend and first AG. At least one site mentioned that he received the Silver Star in WWII, where, as a Navy lieutenant, he commanded John Kennedy's PT boat squadron. Several sites repeated the comment that "Pappy" Boington called him every year to thank him for saving his life. There is also mention of the award of a Silver Star.

I can nowhere find confirmation of the Silver Star, or any description of his war service. I did find that Lyndon Johnson's Silver Star, awarded by MacArthur, was a bogus political act.
Does anyone know anything about Mitchell's military service? Is he referred to in a Boington biography?

He was awarded both the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

I'd like to know the circumstances. I couldn't even find him listed on several sites that purported to record all award winners.
