The definition of an island is that it is land surrounded by water. A peninsula is defined as: A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on the majority of its border, while being connected to a mainland from which it extends. Now, keeping those definitions in mind think about this. Is the Delmarva "peninsula" truly a peninsula? It has the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal separating it from the mainland and Cape Cod has the Cape Cod Canal separating it from the mainland.

Without an aerial photo I'm just throwing this out there. It was named before one or both canals were made.
This is true but that doesn't change the fact that both of them are now technically islands. My wife thinks I have WAY too much time to think of stupid stuff like this but it does keep the mind working.

While you're ponderin', think about the difference between a pond and a lake. Or a bay, sea, and gulf.

Canals have no bearing - if it did, there would be 2 different Central America's straddling the Panama Canal.

If you have a bunch of odds and ends on a table, and they all fall off except one, what do you have left? An odd, or an end?

Ah! but how can it be North America and South America when they are connected by the isthmus of Central America. After all India is called a sub-continent even though it is attached to the continent of Asia which is sure as heck solidly connected to the continent of Europe.

Geesh, I haven't pondered that much geography in decades.

A stream is a spring is a creek. Is something a sea or an ocean? A Democrat or an idiot? So many questions.

A creek is a watercourse that flows seasonally with rainfall. A spring "springs" from an underground source, semi-independent of rainfall. A stream is a collection of creeks and springs.

Not so because Weems Creek in Annapolis is there 365 year-round and was there when Annapolis was first settled. Spa Creek on the other side of Annapolis has been there forever and a day also. Nothing 'seasonal' about either of them. Cadle Creek in Mayo, MD is also not seasonal. I grew up just up the hill from it. Greygun has also spent some time on it I am sure.

All is relative in Geography. Rivers are supposed to run permanently, yet there are several rivers that have water only part of the year. A sea is supposedly larger than a lake, but all the Great Lakes are bigger than the Sea of Galilee. There is no line drawn separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. Etc.
