I guess I'm different from the rest. I want a light load.
I just got a United Sporting Arms Abilene 44 mag 7.5" made in Tucson by Sig Himmellman back in '79 or '80. I spent 4 days testing my new reloads and that hogleg. Also a TC Contender with a 14" barrel.

I am senior who is looking for a light load to shoot 100 yard plus gongs. I love the heavy bullets that make that gong sing.
Grouping Target was at 25 yards with chrono at 4 yards. 95 degrees with little wind. loads were kept in the shade.

Tried IMR 4227 in 44 mag case with a cast 300g FT GC over
16.5g 946 - 1150fps 2" group Abilene 7.5"
16.5g 1065 - 1085 1.5 group TC 14"

17.0g 990 - 1013 1.0 group Abilene 7.5" Accuracy excellent for me
17.0g 1094 - 1095 1.5 group TC 14"

17.5g 990 - 1050 1.5 group Abilene
18.0g 1010 - 1050 2.0 group Abilene
18.6g 1052 Abilene

These were all mild, low recoil. The 4227 with a LP magnum primer produced medium dirty guns. The accuracy was good. The brass looked dirty, and primers looked normal.

and now 4227 in 44 Special cases with a cast 300g FT GC over
9.75g 645 Abilene mouse fart
10.5g 590 - 635 2" Abilene
10.5g 683 TC
11.0g 630 - 660 1.25" Abilene
11.0g 690 TC
11.5g 754 TC mild and pleasant, could use more grains

Note the 30-50fps boost from the 7.5" to 14" barrel with no B/C gap. I expected a bigger difference. Unburnt powder granules were seen in the cylinder. TC shooting 700fps seems the spot were unburnt powder seems to be less.
Two rounds were loaded with bullet sticking out to magnum length. They shot normal and accurate.

I also made up some of the same testing rounds using Titegroup, but I'll save those results for another thread besides the 4227. I have many other columns in my spreadsheet - date, lot no, variance, POI, ...
4227 has been my goto powder for shooting 357 maximum. This was my first foray into 44mag and 44spl. I also did the same testing techniques with 357 mag Trail Boss and 2400 shooting a cast 180g FT GC in a light load.

So I'm guessing I should quit buying H-110? I have a hundred rounds of reloads for my Maximum I'm scared to shoot. I see my top strap starting to erode. I wonder if I could buy the insert that came on my Smith M&P snubby and put one on my Maximum so I can shoot those rounds instead of pull those rounds.

When I got my first .44 Magnum, a Ruger Super Blackhawk, I got to my loading bench. The powder of choice from the introduction of the Magnum was 2400, so i decided to try something different. I bought DuPont (then) IMR-4227 and went to experimenting.

After some trials, I settled on a load of 25.0 grs. IMR-4227 with the 245 gr. Keith SWC. Accuracy was very good, and when I checked my load with a chronograph it indicated 1399 F.P.S. average, though I fudged and called it 1400 F.P.S. With this load and that Ruger, I made what I call my best field shot, taking a ground hog at 110 yards.

was the ground hog cooked well done by the time the bullet hit?

4227 is a great powder for the 45-70 as well. I shoot a 300gr hard cast, and a stiff load of 4227 will push that sucker to 2215fps out of my 18.5" barrel.

My M1894 and SBH like 23.5grs of IMR4337 and 240 XTP's. A deer killin' load.

. You could take a buffalo with that load. Like a small freight train!

about the only place I use it anymore is in the 30-30 for lead loads...but over the years a little 4227 has been used in about every caliber I loaded...I never got great results in 44 Mag, so I may have to try it again...

I use 4227 in 3 44 magnums and my44 special flattop. Works great in all of them.
From light loads, to Top book loads.
