I found this fawn this afternoon

I smelled while on my morning walk, I found it this afternoon because 5 black vultures flew off, and I investigated. It walked there last night or very early AM from the tracks.(I was out at 0400, and saw/heard nothing). Sad. Momma in the woods behind the barn. I have no idea why it died. Our TWRA rep doesn’t think it was a coyote kill.

Coyote would have eaten it and might later. The hole you see is likely from the birds. If the head/neck is not tore up, I would say maybe a natural death.

Based on near twenty years raising orphaned fawns and observing a house heard I believe 50% fawn mortality is to be expected. Fire ants are brutal for fawns. They think they can run through field fence and end up with a broke neck at best or broke lower jaw at worst. Do a Duck search for EHD. I can’t spell it but it kills just one hell of a lot of fawns

As has been said, a predator kill would look a lot different.
That one simply appears to be Mother Nature doing what She does.

Thanks guys, pretty much how I look at it. Around here, the only fawn deaths have been from my neighbors dog, or hit on the road. Around 30 years ago we had a massive deer die off from EHD. What is left of the deer have immunity. This fawn didn’t have any clinical signs.
