Breaking into an occupied house isn't a "violent" crime?????????

I won't dispute that point. Assuming the homicide was justifiable, home owner defending his family and shooting, none of the surviving teens killed anyone. What were their records with the police. Had they been in trouble before? Is this their first offence? If it was the home owner who died, I would look at this a lot differently.
One thing is for certain though; they do have the Constitutional right to appeal to a higher court whether any of us like it or not. I'm sure their attorneys are happier than pigs in mud and there paychecks just got larger. Sorry for the snide comment. I dislike attorneys even more than LEO.

IIRC the story is that four of them smashed in the back window of a house they believed to be vacant. The homeowner responded to the noise by confronting them, and when one of the number attempted to "disarm" the homeowner he was killed after which the surviving three fled the scene.

Point 1.) burglary of a habitation is a felony in Indiana. (Unsure of what class)
Point 2.) Felony murder statute is not meant to be a sentence modifier it is meant as a tool to further a peaceful society.
Point 3.) first offense or fiftieth a seven year old can understand the concept it is wrong to go into another person's house without permission. Implying a 17 year old isn't capable of judging the consequences implies right and wrong doesn't matter only that they will be punished if they get caught.

#3 is the basis for my rant and I suspect that 95% of those here already know the points and it would be rude to repeat them.

Plus the ghetto kid gets an education from the older gang members that are incarcerated, while working out on the weight pile, so when he gets out he can more easily accomplish strong arm robbery.

I think Sheriff Joe in Phoenix has it right. Minor offenses get to sleep in
tents, no TV, lunch meat sandwiches, and they get to wear pink shorts.
He seems to have fewer repeat offenders. 8)

Earth to Congress! Prison isn't supposed to be club med! And it sure as heck isn't supposed to be comfortable! Let's go back to the Branchville experiment. Feed them well and for exercise work the daylights out of them!

Many states have similar laws. When committing a felony and someone is killed whether a victim or perpetrator, the surviving perps can be tried for man slaughter or murder. Same thing for assault or whatever. The logic is that no one would have been harmed if the perp hadn't committed the crime. Seems fair enough to me. I sincerely doubt they thought the house was vacant, where it says they thought the house was empty they were intending to steal whatever they could carry off.
My sympathies to the home owner. He'll probably feel remorse for the death for a long time when it wasn't any fault of his own.
Put the survivors for away for a long time.
