Natural gas already contains hydrogen. The idea is to boost gas volumes be spiking current natural gas with hydrogen to increase its volume.
Adding hydrogen to natural gas will decrease the BTU's of the gas. Thus in order to get the same energy from the gas you will have to burn more.
In refining some processes produce hydrogen (reforming). Others consume hydrogen (hydro treating).
If your production of hydrogen exceeds your need, the excess is put into the fuel gas used for fired equipment. However, if you add too much and the BTU value of the fuel gas drops your equipment becomes inefficient. When this happens some of the excess hydrogen is burned in refinery flare stacks.
Most hydrogen used for other purposes is called electrolytic hydrogen. It is produced from a different process and can range up to 98% pure. This is usually stored and transported in a liquid state.
