I'm sure there is a mfg. That offers a hunting load for 7.62x39 problem is nobody around here keeps said ammo in stock, its all FMJ. Are there some offerings out there for hunting?

Hornady makes 123 grain V-Max steel cased ammo. Whether it works in your rifle is the question. I have little doubt the V-Max will do the job on coyotes. I have 500 of these bullets I intend to load this winter hoping they shoot good in my Colt AR.

One thing to keep in mind is that A.K's/SKS.'s bbl have a bore dimamiter of .311 and so do the russian made rounds,I.E. Wolf, Gold /Silver bear .Last I checked only Speer offerd a .311 Bullet .I honestly don't know what bullet Americian made 7.62x39 are loaded with ,.308 or .311 .Make sure if you are going to handload for an A.K.,SKS,CZ or other europeain made gun most likely the bore will be .311 . .308 will work,but you won;t get the accuracy you would with a .311 bullet .It should be good enough for hunting within the 300 yard limit of the 7.62x39 .My Arsenal SA M 7-SF Milled reciver A.K.is Americian made all except for the bbl which is made in Blugeria so the bore dimamiter is .311 .With Wolf 124gr H.P or FMJ's It will shoot around 1" 3 shot groups at 100 yards . I tried loading up some
.308 120/130 gr soft point ammo for it and the groups opened way up .
Next time I'll use the .311 soft point bullets Just F.Y.I.

I just checked the Speer web sight and they do make a bullet for the7.52x39.It's a Speer Hot-Cor 7.62x39 123gr S.P.Spitzer Cannalure bullet .310 Dim. with a B.C. Of 0.292. You didn't say what rifle you would be using .If your using one Of the Mini-30's I would think the bore would be .308 but you need to check. If your using a europeain gun then this bullet should work a bit better .

I don't konw weather it's .311 or .308 ..If you can't find factory loaded ammo then I'd check with Ruger to be sure ,but since it's 7.62x39 it just might be .311 as most ammo is ,311 .I think Silver/golden bear offers a soft point hunting round .You can get them from www.K-Var.com and there not expencive at all around $6.00 perbox of 20 . Hope this helps.Just Checked They do offer a soft point round the Silver bear is 124gr and the Golden bear is 125 gr . Both are steel cased ,but their currently out of stock . I've taken deer with an SKS with Wolf 124gr H.P's and they do the job but make quite a exit hole .If your not worried about saving the ribs these will work .BTW if the bore on the Mini-30 is .308 you can still shoot the .311 bullet without hurting the gun .

The Federal classic in 123gr hi-shok soft point works great for deer. We have recovered some of the russian 154gr soft points, that showed very little expansion from deer. I think the bullet is probably designed for the 7.62x54 with its much higher velocity.

96/44 I think your right about that ,the 154gr bullet is designed for the 7.62x54 R and is moving 3 -400 FPS faster than the 7.62x39 hence a tougher jacket .The 7.42x54R is a lot closer to the .308 Winchester speed wize than the 7.62x39 which is almoat identical balisticaly the same as a 30 30 .

Early mini 30's were .308 bore, but for most of the last two decades they have been .311. Since 1992 is what I hear.... Not all AK's have a .311 bore, some are .308... even if it has euorpian markings on the reciver, it could have a USA made bbl and be .308, the only way to know for sure is to measure it or ask the MFG, unless the bbl is marked somehow...
The Wolf 154 expands just fine in water-filled jugs; I've been testing my hunting in this manner for 20 years and find it a useful measure of what to expect on game.
