How is a flat bolt possible?

I'm no ruger expert. I was born and raised around Remington bolts, and pump rifles.
So, please explain "flat bolts". Photos of flat bolt actions is a plus

The terminology refers to the design of the bolt handle. Other terms for the Ruger M77 bolt action rifles are "hollowbolt" and "roundbolt" - all refer to the bolt handle design. You can find a pic of one of the flatbolts here:
