Nimrod .308 and I snuck up on this porker Thursday afternoon while he was pilfering the apple crop on "the farm" (Nimrod's little corner of paradise). A 180 gr. Speer RN out of my BLR .308 ended his apple thieving (and everything else, except providing us some hams and pork loin).
The only thing I don't like about the BLR is that it is made in Japan (on the other hand, to be fair, I drove a Mazda for years....go figure). But it IS an American design, and has an interesting design and manufacturing history. Mine's a .243, also a "Blowning." Action is as slick as a well-used '92.

Have some of the Tampa area family up now. A couple of the clan there hunt and keep all their freezers full of feral hog. They say they like the ribs, loins, hams, but the bacon not as good. I wonder if its a taste thing, or the feral hogs lack fat content. Maybe they have the fat content if taken older/bigger ? I don't know.
The ones we kill around here have very little fat on them, so not much in the way of bacon. We just took the hams and backstraps off this one; that way you don't even have to gut them - just skin them down from the hind legs to the shoulders, cut out the backstraps and cut off the hams. Let the varmints have the rest.
I once had a made in Japan .308 BLR. One of my favorite whitetail rifles when I lived in Wisconsin. Wish I still had it. Sold it to finance my move to warmer climes.
