Where I keep my bullets. No, it ain't fire proof or theft proof. But at least I know where the bullets are - which is important at my age. :wink: Stained pine box, spalted maple lid. Thanks for looking. :)

I have a Ammo box coming from a maker in Cody, will not be here until next week, when I get it together I'll send you a pic along with the two pistol boxes he has made for me. One for a single and one for doubles. I plan to just screw mine to the floor, if the bad guys get in they'll have to take it out a box at a time.

Well okay, checked out your stuff, very nice. I guess the next time I need something special in a wooded box I'll be calling, MS is a whole lot closer than Cody, WY. I could make it to your location in just a few hours. Thanks for the post, JP

Very nice! You and Dave should get together sometime and discuss the basics. His big thing is taking firewood and planing it down to make everything from jewelry boxes to corner cupboards. Unfortunately he is making eyes at one of my black walnut trees out back.

Sorry, Dave is my husband. Just retired from the army and getting into the groove of being in farm country. He's taken up woodworking to "relax." Unfortunately he has fell into bad company (my brother) who took the sprocket, bar and chain from a blown chainsaw and built a sawmill of sorts. Unfortunately since the saw in question had a 20" bar even mature trees such as my black walnut are at risk from the mad millers.

As an aside, Dave made our daughter a "keepsake" box out of hedge-apple (Osage orange) that is really quite beautiful when given a fresh dose of lindseed oil. At the moment the workshop area has a stack of "rough cut" white oak that is being "seasoned" by air drying. Dave tells me he plans to make a kitchen table from them.

Dave sounds like somebody I'd like to have a drink with. :) Sorry about the inevitable loss of your walnut tree, but sometimes woodworkers just can't contain themselves. :lol: White oak is great stuff. I hope he quartersawed it instead of flat sawn. Quartersawn is far more stable for things like table tops, and much prettier. It's also very expensive retail. I did a kitchen island for a relative out of it a few years ago. I have a 400 year old white oak tree that I'll probably never cut down, but if I did it would likely fetch $10k or so.

If you are/were a Marine gunny probably not, Dave retired an O3, I know how you guys get along with officers. :) . How the wood was sawed I have idea none. No offense but that sort of thing is outside my training. Actually for the woodworker that mills his own lumber this place is just short of paradise. When my 3rd great grandfather settled here he reserved three parcels that his wife planted in fruit and nut trees. As the farm expanded the various ancestors saw the need for "woodlots" that eventually became wildlife havens even though we still heat with wood.

Within this section (sq mile) he has walnut, white oak, red oak, hickory, hedge-apple, both wild and domestic cherry and varieties of maple. As for my three over one hundred year old walnut trees in the back yard... I doubt they are in any real danger. They would be a hill he wouldn't care to charge if you catch my drift. My biggest fear is that my OMB brother is going to get the bright idea to make a kiln to season the wood and I'll be forced to commit fratricide.

Selena, I was a combat Marine from '63 -'83 and although there is some inter-service rivalry, retiree's tend to get along just fine regardless of rank or branch. I even have brother in law who was career Navy. :) And I did complete the Marine Officers Basic School in Quantico, and a 2 year course at the Naval War College, so we might have more in common than you think.

Your property sounds similar to mine, athough a good bit larger, and I don't have walnut or fruit trees.

Gunny...You said you would like to see some work from other woodworkers. The Ammo box was shipped flat to save some cost the single and double pistol boxes came complete. This Woodworker is Wild Bill Lyons, Cody, WY., sending a little piece of out West to GA. What do you think ???? I just love the way this western style looks, it works perfect for our layout here in the woods.

Thanks. :) He does pretty good work, judging from the joinery, etc. That ammo box looks pretty big. Might be a little tough to move it if you fill it up with lead and brass. :wink:

Question: Are the gun boxes fitted to the gun (inside) or did he leave that up to you? I don't generally do what would be called 'primitive' style, since my occasional customer usually wants something fancy. The ones I've made are custom fitted cushioned interiors as was done for presentation boxes back in the day.
