Hogue rubber grip for Redhawk; how to modify it

Just received Hogue rubber grip for Redhawk; what a disappointment. I tried same style on SRH, the difference is like day and night, far superior design on later one, at least for my hand.

The biggest problem is that hand is shifted down too much, about half inch, maybe more. Yes, I noticed on the picture that hand is positioned lower on RH than on SRH, but I did not expect that that feeling/handling will be so dramatically different.

Now, I am thinking about removing all those finger grooves and taking about 1/4 to 5/16 of the area behind trigger guard, to move hand up. Anybody done this? What is the best rotary tool to modify the rubber?

I am located in small, remote town, traveling to Europe quite soon, so I have no time to order new grips from somebody else and wait for another few weeks.

Dremel sanding drum with medium grit does a lovely job grinding rubber grips.

One caution: Do it outdoors or someplace you don't mind getting "dirty." And DO wear at least a dust mask (a filter respirator would be even better) or you will be horking up black snot for days.

Did you get the full-size Hogue or the Bantam? Mine came with the full-size and it actually shot very nicely; you might want to shoot it before modifying. I changed mine to the Bantam to make it a little better suited for carrying.

Shoot it first and if you still want to modify it a very sharp knife is best used to remove the bulk material followed by a half round 6" bastard cut file and then the dremel with sanding drum or disc as Snake45 said.

Thanks for advice. I am thinking about getting a piece of 3/4 inch board, round one side, and just wrap sand paper around it. Will see once I arrive over there.

Coarse sandpaper works fine for reducing the Hogue rubber grips. You can use a flat like you suggested or wrap it around a broom handle for curves. :D

A round rasp (rattail-type) is the best tool for the job. If you can locate one with the "microplane-style" teeth, that's even better. Just get close to the shape you want, then finish with sandpaper adhered to a wood dowel. You can stick the sandpaper to the dowel with double-stick masking tape. I performed the exact-same modification to my Hogue GP100 grip, and it came out perfectly functional. Of course, you might not please the people who consider looks to be more important than function.
