Henry Rifles

I have a real affinity for lever guns.

The (modern) Henry rimfire has not interested me much, with its Zamac receiver, but the centerfires on the other hand, have caught me looking.

There's a Big Boy .44, locally available, with the brass receiver and 16" barrel.

Anybody here have any real life experience and encouragement for me?

I can only speak from experience with my .22. If the Big Boy is even close to it's quality, fit, finish, and accuracy it is a great gun.

Don't know much about them except, don't buy one for CAS.
I've seen 2 people bring one to a match. By the next month they had a rifle that loads thru the receiver.
For a non competition rifle it may be just fine.

This is just a grab-and-go gun for me. I'm not involved with CAS. (I thought I'd like to be at one time, but I never could get a response from any of the local CAS people.) The 16" barrel is still the only reason I'd be looking at this over a Marlin.

My ffl called yesterday and said someone he knows has a Marlin Levergun 44 Mag/44 Spec, for sale and was I interested. I can check on that for you. I've never had a Henry so can't speak to it, but I'm sure sold on the Marlins.

The .44 Marlins are very available. I'm just interested in something different as the only means of obtaining a 16" barrel.

I think the lack of replies about the Henry's, is an answer in itself. Folks, just like me, just don't want to take a chance. Kind've like Ruger was, and still is, to many folks. :mrgreen:

I had my first chance to shoot a Henry .22 a few weeks ago, and agree: if the centerfire is as nicely done as that particular rimfire, it should be a great choice.

I have four henrys and they are great. I just bought a bigboy in 45 colt, great shooter. The best thing about henrys is the service if you ever need it. Also they are made in america.

I think their rifles look nice, but they have way too much drop in the stock. My cheek isn't anywhere near the stock to see the sights.

I have read one very bad review of them, and everything else has been in praise of them. So I would say get it, I would like one myself, as a house gun.

I had to look up Zamac, that is a new one on me: Zinc Aluminum Magnesium and Copper (alloy). I mean the word, not the concept; I think "pot metal" sums it up, or gets close enough.

I don't own a Henry, but I'd buy anything they make. Their rifles are modern works of art with very consistent wood/metal fit and finish. Lay 3 identical rifles in a row and you'd be hard pressed to pick the best one. I love how they finish their walnut, very classy! I've never read a negative review. I have read where the stock drop is a bit too low for scope mounting on their "brass" series.

Great rifles I'm sure but I prefer a side loader.

Why didn't they just stick with the side loading like the Winchesters or Marlins?

This one was a gift from the forum I am a moderator on. When I recently hit 20,000 posts there members got together and set up a gofundme for me and Kenneth, me for activity there and him because he has always encouraged me to do anything I want online and to just have fun, we are next looking towards a quality optic to be mounted on it.

I have a Golden boy and limited edition "Ducks Unlimited" inlayed and engraved Silverboy. They both shoot very well, have silky-smooth actions and hit point of aim with a wide variety of ammo, and look beautiful while doing it. Neither have the cheap pot-metal receiver. I say GO FOR IT. You won't be disappointed. Besides, when you get tired of it you can make me a great deal on a barely used beauty. Teeheehee !!!

I admire the center fire Henry's. But, for a bug out lever gun I will stick with something more economical but reliable. Rossi 92 stainless 357 with 16" barrel fits those needs.
