Have question about a Mini 14 and mounting a scope.

I bought a Mini 14 awhile back and I'm mounting a Leopold v1 3x9-40 I won at a gun shop. for some reason
when I tried to adjust it, it runs out of adjustment on the elv. I'm using the rings that come with the rifle they
are marked high. Do I need to get shorter rings ?? I looked on Rugers site and it shows that the rings I have are for
a 52mm obj. #5B and the med. rings are for 42mm obj. 4B it doesn't show one for 40mm obj.

I bought a Mini-14 about 6 months ago, and could never get my Zeiss 3x9x40 riflescope to zero with the included Ruger medium scope rings-I ran out of adjustment. I read that other have had the same problem. I installed the included Picatinny rail, then used Leopold Rings and it zeroed fine. From my research readings, it seems that Ruger is not that particular in the alignment of the receiver to barrel, or the receiver milling for their scope rings, or something similar (??), but whatever it is, it is not all that great. I also know that the plain iron sights needed to be adjusted to just inside their max drift adjustment. Anyways, my gun is okay with the iron sights, and with the Picatinny rail, but not with Ruger Scope rings mounted to the milled receiver. I also mounted a Vortex Venum Red Dot on the Picatinny rail, and can swap the Red Dot and the Riflescope without messing up the alignment: i.e.: they both remain sighted in.

Thank you TomV I will try that tomorrow, I have some Leopold med. rings I can try with the Ruger rail. would be nice if that works.

I think that you'll be a lot happier with the rail arrangement.
Obtaining a proper cheek weld though, that may be horse of a different color. While removing the rear sight Ass'y will allow for mounting the scope as low as possible, you may find that you'll still need some sort of cheek riser for the stock regardless.

And just in passing.....That little tube of blue Loc Tite which is included with the rail kit is there for a reason. The reason being that Mini-14 platform is notorious for shaking mounts and rings loose.

I'm not familiar with the Mini but their bolt action 77-series with integral bases use a higher rear ring than the front and the rear ring will have a higher number than the front, like a #5 rear and a #4 front. If you mount them in the wrong order you can't zero anything.

I'm purty-sure that's what comes with all Mini's these days. And nope, Mini's don't require two different heights.

OK got the rail and scope on and all is good to go, may have to work with the cheek weld other wise it's all good.
