Is John Gallagher still in business, and if so do you have a current email address and telephone number for him? I contacted him by email last Fall about converting a 32 h&r Single Six to a Bisley grip frame, hammer and trigger and rebluing the gun (I have all the parts) he promptly responded with suggestions and a quote to do the work, but I had to defer doing it. When I emailed him about a week ago stating I wanted to go forward with the project, I got no response. When I called the number on his website, I got a message that the telephone is no longer in service. If not, can you recommend someone else to do this work? Black Dog

Yes he is still in business. I have a custom revolver project with him now. I have recently emailed him as well but have not had a response. I have not tried to call him. I have however been in contact with a gent on another forum that was at John's place a couple weeks ago dropping off some guns for some work. He said he was pretty buried.

205-384-5229 I got a custom 3 screw 44 special converted to Bisley back from him June 13th. Good luck getting him to return calls. I just left him a message and he emailed me a copy of his FFL. I shipped the revolver to him March 23rd and received it back June 13th. Google his website and you can email him. He will call you back when he is ready to start on your project. Pictures of the one he did for me are on my Advise post under Ruger Revolvers. He never answered an email.

Edit to add email address

I have left messages for him in the last 3 months and as yet, have not heard a word from him.

However, as Ga Cracker said, he is going strong.

Yup, I prefer to not call him. I figure it he's talking on the phone he's not gunsmithin! I'll keep patiently impatiently waiting :D

That is fine as long as you do not need to ask questions before sending him your gun. I need some clarification on a couple of services he offers and I can't get any info.

I guess my gun will stay in it's present form...as I won't send it without talking with him or a representative first.

Ya I hear ya. I talked with him a few times and emailed quite a bit as we figured it all out. Keep trying. He's a great guy and spent quite a bit of time talking to me and answering all my questions. Also, I understand that John is not a "production shop" in the sense that he doesn't have like 6 guys working for/with him. Which I like.

Today I forwarded my previous email which I had sent to the email address listed on John Gallagher's website to John Gallagher at the different email address posted above by Jim Luke. I also again called the telephone number listed on the website and was able to leave a voice mail asking him to reply to my emails. Curiously, when I reviewed the website, I noticed that he has deleted the address for his shop, which was previously listed so that you could ship your firearm to him. Black Dog

John Gallagher called yesterday in response to my email and telephone call. He was very cordial and apologized for not responding sooner but said he had been working full time for a week or so remodeling and enlarging his shop. He hopes to be back in full operation by the first of next week. We discussed my Bisley conversion project in detail. I will send him my revolver on Monday. The telephone number, email, and street address posted above for John Gallagher is correct. Black Dog

Glad to hear this...I will give it another try.

He nearly always answers when I call him, but most of the time I just go see him. about an hour and a half from home. He's got two Browning HPs of mine now and I just got back a S&W M-29-2 that he fitted a cylinder for me on. John does great work, IMO, and he does it all himself. Will probably see him Saturday at the B'ham gunshow.

Time for an update: I sent my 32 H&R magnum 6 1/2 in Single Six, along with a Bisley grip frame, hammer, trigger and Bisley grip panels to John Gallagher Monday June 30. He fit the Bisley grip frame, hammer and trigger, adjusted the cylinder latch timing to lessen the possibility of cylinder turn-line, did a basic trigger job, polished out the existing cylinder turn-line, reblued the entire gun, and fitted the Bisley grip panels. I received the revolver (and the old grip frame, hammer and trigger) back on Thursday July 10. The workmanship, fit and finish are superb. I have owned this revolver for many years. I reload for it, and have used it a lot more than my other revolvers in later years, here in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina where I spend 6 months of the year. I now have a brand new revolver with the Bisley grip frame I like best. I highly recommend John Gallagher. Black Dog

i just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago about taking him a gun to get in the pipeline. he is a one man shop that is really busy.

"One man shop..." That's what I like about John. A John Gallagher gun is going to be all John Gallagher.

I replied to your pm but am not sure it sent. Thanks!

Perry

i have been fortunate to watch him build a few guns and he mostly hand builds everything, going to the mill or lathe when it was absolutely unavoidable.

Maybe someday I'll make it to his place. I'd love to see that. He'll be fitting a Bisley grip frame to the New Model Flat top and also be making grips for it. I'm sure it will be superb. I"m getting pretty excited now. I just met up with a guy today and got his brand new custom brass Accurate Mould to cast up some boolits for him since he's not totally geared up for casting yet. We worked out a trade deal, we'll both end up with a pile 'o' boolits. :D He had it made, 465gr Keith style gas check.

I ran a one man shop for many years and it was always hectic, just from local business in a 50 square mile area, let alone out of state business. When you've got a steady 15 to 20 gun backlog from just the locals, you don't get to spend a lot of time communicating as much as you would like to. I stuck with the one man operation because I know my work and trust it. I saw other semi-local smiths take on help and have their business and integrity go south in a hurry. It's hard to find someone who thinks, works, is conscientious, and has your same skills. I'm retired now and just take on the odd job here and there. I personally found great satisfaction in working alone. Sort of like the "buck stops here" syndrome.....................Dick

I hesitate to even say this because it's not my place to share, but John has had some health issues to deal with recently. This has most likely contributed to slower than usual turn around and maybe even slower than usual communications. All I can say is be patient, he will get to your project and the wait is worthwhile.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I hope things get worked out for him.

I sent my stainless Super Blackhawk to John back on June 3rd and am, too, waiting patiently. From all I've heard it will definitely be worth the wait.

He has been pretty good about responding to my emails, but I only emailed him to get a quote for engraving after he already had my gun to switch out the barrel. I do not believe in pestering the sanity out of anyone...being a taxidermist myself it is my practice to let folks know up front how long it will take to complete their mount and I promise to update them when I am down to a three week window. That allows them to prepare for any balance due, etc.

I hope he overcomes any possible health issues and will keep him in prayer. He seems like one heck of a nice guy, and while perusing pics of his work it is very obvious he has great talent as well.

He probably gets so much work because he charges so reasonably for his it. If he bumped his prices up 20% he would still be more affordable than most of the other premier gunsmiths. We all like a bargain, but if I was in his shoes I'd bump up the profit margin a bit. He may get a bit less work (doubtful), but it would be more worth his while and he could live more comfortably, perhaps, with that profit margin padded just a bit. Compare his prices to Linebaugh and others. Upping his prices a bit would not make him less competetive at all, in my subjective opinion.

I personally felt a bit guilty about the price he quoted me for engraving and tossed in an extra $25 bucks to ease my conscious (I joked and said it is a tip, mad money, lunch money, etc.)

John is a class act and the real deal.

I'm still patiently waiting for my rebarreled (and engraved) Super Blackhawk from Mr. Gallagher...but will be sure to post a pic when I get it back. lol

Well, John emailed me a couple weeks ago and said he has been digging out from a huge backlog of work, but that he should be finished with my gun soon and contacting me shortly for shipping arrangements. Really looking forward to seeing his work, and will post pics as soon as I get the gun back.

Did a search and came across this thread so had to bring it back from the depths. Any more current news on him? Seems his website is no longer. :( Thinking I'll finally send off a little grip frame fitting project to him.

Posting this here means when I need Johns expertise I'll be at the back of a long line. Oh well it is worth the wait.

Sorry about that...wish it was the only thing I screwed up the last couple days

Hoping to hear from John soon...he told me this past October in an email that he was trying to dig out from underneath quite a large backlog of work. I'm not sweating it. My Super Blackhawk is in good hands. I sent it to him June 3rd 2014, so the two-year anniversary is fast approaching. I hope all is well with him. Obviously I look forward to seeing my gun once he is finished...admittedly it has been hard to be without it for two deer seasons...lol.
