Gunblast article on the SP-101 22...

Thanks for the link Boge. I emailed Jeff a while back asking him about kit gun opinions. He advised me to wait a few more weeks for something new that was coming out, but wouldn't elaborate. I had a hunch this was it. I ordered one a couple days ago.

Hmmm....looks like Ruger will soon be making another change to this model, at least the catalog number. The pic in Quinn's article shows it as being a KSP-242-8. But with a 4.3" barrel, the catalog number needs to at least be KSP-244-8.
I also note that all the markings on the SP #577-01215 in the Quinn article are laser engraved, as are the markings on #577-01175 in the G&A "OOPS" article. But #577-01054 (also pic'd in the G&A OOPS article) has a rollmarked serial number and rollmarked eagle logo on the frame, but I can't see any other markings on the barrel of that one.
As some of you get these 8-shot SP's, be sure to keep everybody up to date on your sn's as I'd really like to get a closer breakdown on how many rolmarked guns there are (a RARE variation already!!).

On mine there is nothing on the left side of the barrel, right side says Ruger SP101 and lower on the lug says .22 LR Caliber. On the bottom of the barrel says Read Instruction Manual Ruger, Newport NH, USA.
All appear to be rollmarked.
Serial is 577-016xx.

Purchased mine today, detail stripped it, polished a LOT of light tool marks and surface scratches out, properly lubed it and installed grips that fit my hands.
Trigger pull is a bit stiffer than the Gun Blast subject piece, slightly over 6 lbs single action. Didn't try to measure the DA pull.
No markings at all on the left side. Deep, crisp engraved RUGER SP101 and .22 LR CAL on the right side of the barrel with the Safety info and Newport NH on the bottom. Serial number, Ruger crest with black background and the R mark on the right side of the frame. Serial number 577-028XX.

Shot over 250 rounds with it today. I had serious trouble holding good groups at 25 yards, then I realized it was the fault of the glowing fiber optic dot in the front sight. I blacked it out with a marker and then was able to regulate the nice square post in the rear blade and put over 50 rounds into about 4 inches shooting without support. The single action trigger smoothed a noticeable amount during shooting. The DA pull, while heavy was extremely predicable making accurate fast shooting easy.
The only issue I encountered was a loose rear sight cross pin. I will need to stake it, as it nearly fell out after ever 50 or so rounds. Ruger has a definite winner with the SP101 .22 and it may be the ultimate .22 trail and camp gun.

Purchased and installed a Wolff SP-101 spring kit in my SP-101 .22. Made a very significant improvement in the trigger without any reliability issues.
The kit comes with an 8LB trigger return spring and 12, 10 and 9 LB mainsprings.
I used the 8LB trigger return spring (same one I put in my SP-101 .357) and the 12LB mainspring. I tried the 10LB, however when I test fired on spent brass, the firing pin marks were much less pronounced than original. Moved up to the 12 LB and the makes looked 100% the same as original. The OEM spring is 14LBs. Use a dinner fork as a spring compressor for changing the mainspring. Works like it was designed for the job. (A tip I wish I'd though of 3 spring jobs back!!)
The spring mods brought the single action pull down to 4.5LBS and smoothed the double action tremendously. Gun is fun to shoot DA.
By the way- the 10LB trigger return spring may be used as a 2LB reduction in older GP-100's which came with a 12LB stock. The newer ones have a 10LB.

My sight pin was starting to wander.
Tapped it twice at a 90-degree angle with small hammer to create a minute bend, then tapped it back into the hole till it was flush.
It's not going anywhere now.
No need to stake anything, takes less than one minute to correct.
