Great Horned Owl

Visited the in-laws in Oak Creek Canyon last weekend and took a hike one evening. Saw this guy (gal?) on the ground over some prey, spooked it and it flew up into this cool dead tree. I only had a cell phone camera, here's the best pic of the bunch.

Great Horned Owls I give a lot of respect. To be out in the woods and see one in a tree looking at me like I was his next meal is a little unnerving. :shock:

Had one knock my hat off once when I was workin' a rabbit squealer in Eastern Washington. Also saw one fly off with a nearly grown pheasant once. We ain't the only hunters out there!

I had one land next to a buddy of mine while we were collecting water samples off a rural bridge. No sound whatsoever. No photo either as when they saw each other - both took off...

When the wife and I wee first married we lived in a second floor apartment that had a balcony. We had a Great Horned owl that used to visit us. He would land on the porch railing and would eat hot dogs out of my hand. We also think he ate our cat. Beautiful bird that some 'hero' shot just after we moved into away from the apartments.
