In my area we had another home destroyed with a propane leak... equivalent to a 2k lb bomb...nothing left but sticks...clothing draped in trees 300 yds away
I press the "test" button on my carbon monoxide detectors every once in awhile just to check that they are still working. Not something to get careless about.
But I find it not very likely that in his $3.3 million dollar, 8,000 square foot home that there would not have been working detectors. Maybe the autopsies will clear up the issue, but why the pills scattered all over near his deceased wife? Why was the dog in the closet? Why was the front door to the home slightly open and unsecured? Suspicious for sure.

Authorities have ruled out that possibility as of a report I saw tonight.
Haven't heard anything on the pills that were found about the wife. Wondering if he died and she decided that she couldn't go on without him...
Wish they would tell us what the mystery pills were, they might help tell us a story of what went down

And yet, the latest from the press conference today (2/28) was there was no indication of that after both decedents were tested for it. The plot thickens.
Prescription meds, nothing illicit. Blood pressure, thyroid meds, etc. is what I heard on the news this morning.
Innocuous enough. I was thinking maybe barbiturates, sleeping pills OD.
The fact that both died, apparently at roughly the same time, AND their dog died as well tells me that there is more to this story. Maybe the autopsies will give us an answer, or maybe not.

I think it was a murder suicide. The dog killed them both then committed suicide.

Carbon monoxide was ruled out by autopsies on all three.

Especially the dog being locked in the closet. That sounds like something a home invader would do. Throw a steak into the closet and shut the door.
2 things I’m blown away by,
his appearance in the latest pictures. Wow! He was unrecognizable.
That the house is only worth 3.8 million dollars.

He was a pretty private guy by Hollywierd standards. He retired at around 70 I think? I remember reading something years ago when he retired, him saying something like, 'what am I going to do now, play someone's grandfather?' I doubt he needed more money or the ego boost.
A 3.8 million dollar hose in NM, even in Santa Fe, is a lot different than a 3.8 million dollar house in CA, where most of 'them' live. I would think big money homes for the typical a listers are more of a 'look at me' status symbol, which it doesn't seem like the Hackmans cared about. How much house does a couple need? We don't really need half of our house.

My wife wanted to watch the Academy Awards last night, so I watched most of it with her. I've always known on the huge influence of gays within the movie business, but it seemed even more than usual on display during this awards show.

As I recall, Dave Ferrie's death was indeed attributed to an overdose of a thyroid medication. If that is true, it would seem that the report that you mention is misleading. Whether that was intentional on the author's part I can't say...still though, where there's smoke, there's at least some amount of fire, eh?

If one was going to commit suicide with an overdose of pills, why would pills be strewn around the room? I would put the pills in my mouth and swallow them.

Didn't say it was suicide. just said that it's possible to die from overdosing thyroid meds.

It's more fun speculating to see how many of us are correct or just idiots. I include myself in there.
If she was distraught from finding the love of her life dead on the floor, it is possible that she could have been shaking uncontrollably while fumbling with the bottle for enough pills to end her suffering that some would wind up on the floor. Now, if there were pills on top of her body it might be a bit "suspicious"
