Saw the terrible attack in France. Looked like some had Mini 14's, but there was a hole in the butt stock like the old M1 carbine?

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had a batch of Mini's with red recoil pad.
But you know...Ruger sold quite a few Mini's to the French Government...probably could have made them in whatever form they wanted.

I noticed the same thing. It looked like the local police had wood stocked mini's and the specialists had military carbines, subs and bullpups.

French CRS anti-terror and riot police (my French sucks but it amounts to something like "Companies for the Security of the Republic," in other words, military controlled and organized police like the Spanish Civil Guard and Italian Carabinieri) have had Minis for many years. They are the selective fire version (AC556), and now seem to be issued to selected marksmen in each squad. They used to also issue some GP-100s).

"ordinary" CRS military anti-terrorist police have lots of Minis; their SWAT equivalent mostly uses 9mm submachineguns and their infantry assault rifle, the MAS "Trumpet" bullpup.

Back in the bad old days, the French SWAT-type cops carried Thompson sub machine guns. How do I know? Got stopped by a night patrol one night around the Sorbonne during the youth riots 40+ years ago. Just out for a walk but those tough guys worked to their own rules. Butt stroke to the gut and up adainst the wall was how they said ' hello, papers lease'.

I was lucky enough to handle one of the French police minis in Newport while attending the armourer's course back in '87.

Quite simply, it was beautiful thanks to the nice walnut stock which was finished longer than standard, if memory serves they were in the 14-14.5" LOP range.

The CRS only come out when there is trouble, and it is well to steer very clear of them. Like all cops in similar circumstances, they are edgy. Unlike most cops, they don't have to justify their actions much. If in Paris or anywhere in France, you see a water cannon, go the long way around....
