My wife thinks she wants to now try clay pigeons, so I just bought a mechanical thrower for $40. She is 5' 2" and not exceptionally strong, so I am looking for a 20 gauge that is not really heavy or long. I'm not sure about auto vs. pump. Open to either one, I suppose. She has never shot anything other than my Ruger .45 NM Blackhawk (she didn't like it), her 10/22, her Mk II pistol, and now her SR22 purse gun. I am very open to opinions as to what would be good for her. Probably some sort of youth model? I sure don't want anything costly until I see if she does like clays, or if it is just a fleeting idea. It just needs to be something simple, light and short to start her off. Thanks.
 
Mossberg 20 youth model pump. Comes with an option for buying a full size stock later. As is, a heck of an option for a home defense gun also. IMHO
 
Got the girl friend this one for a house gun. The stock is adjustable. The barrel might be shorter than you want but it does have rem chokes

Bass pro often has the Remington's on sale along with a $50 rebate from Remington
The Remington weighs a little more due to the steel receiver, approx. 3/4 lb. depending on barrel length and stock material. The express compact jr. has a softer recoil pad, the standard youth mod. tend to be on the hard side, DK about the Mossberg.
Personally I like the Remington's but I don't know any one who is unhappy with their Mossberg

These are really nice and lighter than the standard Ithaca 37.
 
The lightest , handiest ,semi-auto 20 I ever swung is a Franchi AL-48.
Downside to light is that you start to feel the recoil,,,, something to think about.

i agree buy a remington 1100 lt20 and you have something nice to resell.(or keep with a full size stock)
$300 import guns are just that.

Just a thought, but a 7/8 oz load out of a 12 gauge will have less recoil than the same load out of a 20 gauge. If you already have a 12, just get a cheap MEC loader and make some soft rounds for the little lady. Best is you can make them really light if need be.
 
I would not go with a "youth model" because the stock may be too short and hit her in the cheekbone. That is what happened to my wife until I replaced the stock with a full sized one. You can always shorten them.
 
I just bought my wife a 28 ga Savage O/U with screw in chokes for my wife as a surprise. Then I found a BEAUTIFUL Beretta 20 ga that she likes better. So I'd be willing to let it go for $450 shipped.....

Thanks to all who advised/responded. I'm going with the above-mentioned TriStar for her and see how she likes shooting a shotgun. I appreciate everyone's help. I don't know what I'd do without you guys/gals.
