The wildfire that burned north of Hutchinson went across our gun club's shooting range. Damage could have been a lot worse. The storage shed for the long range rifle shoots burned to the ground, but is covered by insurance. It burned through the center section of a 40' awning over the cowboy action range, and burned some target frames. The clubhouse (and its propane tank) were spared, but the fire went past it and burned a couple of large timbers that marked parking spots. Club members came out today and got a lot done. They tore out and replaced the damaged awning, but the rails for shooting positions will have to wait for another day. We cleared off all the fire-damaged cedars on the west end of the property, and a Boy Scout troop loaded everything on a flatbed truck and two trailers.

I took advantage of the burn-off to scour the right-hand berm on our three shorter ranges, looking for brass that had been concealed by vegetation. I filled 4 shotgun shell boxes (from the big plastic trash barrel that didn't burn) with mostly 5.56 brass. Most of it will go in my scrap brass box, but some was virtually untouched by the fire. I also found three unfired rounds that didn't "cook off" in the fire. All in all, a tiring day, as I'm not used to hard work like this. Happy to get home and wash off the filth. :)

That is the range our son was a member of when he was stationed at McConnel AFB. Nice range, sorry to hear of your loss. Really like the folks we met in Kansas and I miss seeing them. However I suspect we will not be back that way again. ( said that exact same thing about west Florida and he's tight back there looking for a home to purchase)
