FiFi will soon be joined by "Doc", another rescued B29 and only the 2nd in the world deemed airworthy!

The United States Department of Defense has granted B-29 Doc approval to use the non-joint-use runway at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita for final ground testing and eventual first flight operations.

Docs Friends“The approval from the Pentagon is another important milestone along our path to first flight,” said Jim Murphy, Doc’s Friends Restoration Program Manager. “With the airworthiness certificate from the FAA we received a few weeks ago, and now permission from the Pentagon to use the runway at McConnell, first flight for Doc is imminent.”

Some or many RF members may know the tragic story of the Kee Bird, a B-29 that was stationed in Greenland during the earliest days of the Cold War. The Kee Bird went down (emergency landing) intact in 1947 and spent the next 47 years abandoned and frozen on the ground. An heroic but unsuccessful rescue attempt was made, and they'd planned to fly it out...

Just a crushing ending... The race against weather and costs drove them to make a couple bad decisions, and the aircraft was lost.

But Kee Bird would likely have been the only airworthy B29 at the time. (FiFi received her airworthiness certification in 2010 after a 3+ million dollar restoration project)
