Custom Ruger #1's

Back in the early 80's, I was working a lot of overtime...
On one job, a mechanic had a 458 barreled action I picked up cheap.
On the next job I was near Raleigh NC and stop by Hill's. the main Salesman, Bobby said he would take care of making a rifle out of the action. I wanted a no frills elephant gun.
I don't know who did the metal and finish (possible done at Hills). rechambered, bead blasted and blacken.
the wood work was done by Bishop Stock. I can't recall the grade of wood. the forearm was a bit big for my taste, but that is what Bishop said I needed. the scope is a leupold 1-4 VIII. Can't recall, but I think that was a 20 gauge belt and I punched the ~1/2 holes for the bullets to pass through
I shot it for a while and then it went into storage. I opened the storage boxes a few months back, wiped it down and took this pics. In my current health, I am afraid to touch a round off.

Here's one in .223. This one has been in here before, but it IS nice, and meets the criteria...rebarreled with a blackened, stainless 25" 1-9 twist blank, Canjar single-set trigger, factory stock/forend with several coats of Tru-oil rubbed in. One of the nicest pieces of American walnut I've seen. And it shoots extremely well. Almost boring to shoot off the bench, with 1/2" groups the norm.

Mine's not completely custom and has been on here before but here's my 458 Lott that Jack Huntington cropped the nose of the thumb safety and then bead blasted. My Buddy Randall Fung of Fung Grips did the stippling on the grip and forend and I added the limbsaver recoil pad. It sports a Leupold Scout Scope and it has been to Africa twice. Here are a couple of pics for ya...

Those aree some impressive stats re fps with a 350 gr bullet.
The low glare metal finish also was a wise move. How do I know? The only SS/laminate #1 I have kept -- a 7mm 08 K1B --- got the same treatment after the first day in the field with damn thng near blinded me from the garish flare of the sunlight on it. You couild trace that puppy from space w/o magnification. What was Ruger thinking?

Thanks Gentlemen. She's a shooter alright and screams pure duty. Until I got my Hawkaye Alaskan, this was going to be my "One" rifle for everything. Bunnies to Brontosaurus, I had it covered, but I have to admit, the Hawkeye balances a smidge better and has a faster followup. I also like the Trijicon scope I have on my 416 just a wee bit better as well, but for the Lott, the Leupy Scout Scope is the only way to fly!!!

This is my Custom 300 Weatherby--very accurate, a bit on the heavy side---28" varmit barrel, custom stock--I had the scope mount made from my own design. The barrel has no rib.

Luvs2hunt62, beautiful rifle there. I am glad to see that you are not one of those that pretends to believe that "Any Leupold 1x4 or 2x7 will give you plenty of eye relief mounted on a No.1 using standard ruger rings."

I have a #1 that id like to get some info on. Its a 357 magnum limited edition with a highway patrolman stamp on it. How rare is this gun? And what would be the value of it?

In the world of Ruger No. 1s, it is not a rare rifle. I believe there were 1500 produced with the CHP stamp. There are many other older and newer No. 1s that are much rarer, one of which is the unstamped overrun 357 rifle (ca. 350 made).
Your best bet is to find a CHP officer who might think it's the cat's meow.

This is a 1976 "Year of American Liberty" 22-250 #1B, with a custom stock and my custom scope mount. The last 2 pictures show the difference between my mount abd the offset Ruger rings. Enjoy.
