Heading to pick up a Ruger American .22 Carbine with threaded barrel tomorrow. Looking for a nice quiet host for my Gentec suppressor.
What's everyone thoughts on these. It was cheaper to buy one then to have my barrel on my 77/22 threaded or buy an additional threaded barrel. Plus I like my 77/22s the way the factory made them.

I'm happy with mine. I have the full length, non-threaded version. Can typically keep 9 out of 10 shots inside a 1" square at 50 yards with cheap, bulk ammo. Good enough for the intended purpose of the rifle.

I have the Compact 22 and it is very accurate with ammo it likes. At 50 yards, Eley Target usually gives .35"- .4" groups and CCI MiniMag hp does the same. Eley Match gives .25 - .3" groups. I have a Burris 2x7 scope on it. Ammo it doesn't like shoots patterns. Like most 22's you need to see what it likes.

I have a RAR Rimfire Compact I bought for my grand daughter to use and purchased the long pull stock insert for myself. It's accurate, has a good trigger pull and is reliable. A very good value.

I've had good accuracy and zero functional issues with my three compacts (.22LR, .17HMR, .22WMR).

I picked the rifle up today. The thing is very accurate. I like it!
I would say it is considerably more accurate then both of my 77/22s. May not be as pretty but I was looking for something to quietly take out critters and I believe this is the medicine.
I mounted a older USA Made Burris 4x12 Ao compact Rimfire scope that was on my 77/22 Hornet that just didn't feel right. Oh it feels so right on this gun.
Tomorrow I'll get out and try to see what I can hit at 100 yds.

The only issue I have is the swivel will not unscrew so I can swap out the cheek rest. And I wish Ruger included rings with all their guns with sights or not.
This gun was a distributor exclusive so it came with a BX25 mag and not a 10 round. In the past I read that the Bx 25 mags will not work with subsonic rounds. Which would defeat the purpose of having a threaded rifle. Just some thoughts.

Another thought....... A simple mag swap cures that potential 'problem'.....It's not like 10-22 mags ain't cheap, common and available.

I have a handful of 10 rd mags. But I thought it odd that they would include a BX25 with a threaded barrel gun.

Well, I hadta find out if that crap was true. Since everything you 'read' on the innernet is gospel, I loaded up 2 bx 25's with CCI std vel and run them thru the American compact. Just as I figgered, flawless feeding and operation. I still can't believe that a guy with 'a handful' of 10 rounders AND the furnished BX wouldn't try it himself before spouting that 'I read it on the innernets' line.....

I hope that swivel screw don't beat you.

I have an American Compact in .22LR. Very pleasingly accurate, more so than even my factory 10/22-T's. I really appreciate the wonderful target crown on my rifle, but I wonder if it had been a threaded barrel, and not having this target crown, would it be as accurate?

And for the record, I also owned this rifle in the .22 Magnum chambering. Mediocre.

Ruger IS 'odd'.....They tend to ship what works, generally. I'd be willing to bet they even paid someone to test this particular combo, instead of relying on 'innerweb gossip', to produce a gun that functions. It would cost them too much to have to replace all these. Think about it......

well to be precise I read not to use subsonic ammo in the BX25 paper work that came with the magazines I purchased a year or two ago. Here is the paper work that came with it. So now that you have read it on the internet, it must be true.

This genuine Ruger® factory magazine has been tested and has proven to
feed as reliably as the standard BX-1™ 10-round Ruger® rotary magazine.
BX-25™ magazines will work with any factory original Ruger® 10/22®
Rifle, SR-22® Rifle, 22 Charger™ Pistol and 77/22® Rifle.
The BX-25™ will run reliably with a wide variety of ammunition.
However, you may experience malfunctions (“jams”) when using
subsonic ammunition or ammunition with heavy coatings of bullet lube.
In some instances, cleaning the magazine may improve reliability,
but in other cases you may need to switch to a different type or brand
of ammunition to get the full use and enjoyment from your BX-25™
magazine

What's the problem with removing the rear swivel base? Is it stripped and won't unscrew or is it just tight and you can't remove it by hand? I had to run a small allen key through the base's hole to provide the leverage to unthread it but it did come out fine.

As to rings, Ruger only provides them with their rifles or revolvers that have their proprietary bases machined into the receiver. They don' provide them with guns that use the more common Weaver or other make screw on bases.

BX25s

The caution about sub sonic ammo really applies to the 10/22 varieties, as many semi-autos won't cycle reliably with the low powered ammo.

The caution about heavy lube applies to all as that can build up in the magazines and slow down the movement of the follower.

There is no reason a Long Rifle sub sonic round wouldn't feed from the magazine, so using them in a bolt gun shouldn't be an issue.

I sold all my BX25s in favor the the shorter (and handier for me) BX15s, but I've never had a serious feed issue with either size.

It seems I was having issues with the first bx25 last year when I was using Aguilla Super snipers Subsonic. I believe they were 60 gr bullets. Again I was using it out of my 10/22. I never tried them out of my 77/22 as for it wasn't suppressed . I'll have to try them out of the American.
As for the swivel screw, it turns about an 1/8 of an inch and stops. I'm from the old school of don't force things that don't want to turn easily. I would rather have the high cheek on it but it seems to work well with the low one.
So far accuracy has been awesome. I managed a couple of 100 yard groups just under an inch. with most being just under an inch and a half. I can't remember my 77/22s doing that well.

The swivel base is threaded into a standard hex nut that's in a recess in the stock insert. Threading is the very common #10-32. The initial removal will be tight but you really can't hurt anything using reasonable force. After that it comes out more easily.

Wayno, I asked about the target crown on the threaded barrel models on rimfirecentral.com and the response I received was that it still had a target crown on the barrel. I haven't seen one to verify if this is true. and now I will have to do some more research! :? Was your 22 Magnum threaded?

That is a good question. I had forgotten if my .22 mag was threaded or not, but after a little archive research I found mine did have a threaded barrel. But I don't remember that it had a target crown. A photo of the muzzle does not even reveal a target crown.
