Badger Matt
Single-Sixer
We're in Colorado dropping off our son at Colorado School of Mines in Golden and visiting my folks who live in nearby Loveland. My dad, a once avid flyfisherman, treated my son and me to a day of guided flyfishing on a ranch at the mouth of the Big Thompson River. It was a fine day of firsts and biggest...
Chad, my son, was first out of the chute after 2 hours of unsuccessful, a few hook-ups but none landed, belly-boating. He took this gorgeous Rainbow from the shore. It was his first flyfishing catch and he's now excited about the possibility of taking Flyfishing 101 as a PE elective at his college. How cool is that?
I didn't have any luck at the larger lake where Chad caught his fish and the guide receommended I didn't break out my 5wt bamboo rod there anyway as some of the monsters could snap it. When we went downstream, however, there were 'smaller' fish and I decided to break out the bamboo rod and reel my father had made for me as a promotion gift. It was handmade by the owner at Elkhorn Fly Rod and Reel in Loveland. It didn't take long to hook a nice Rainbow and I let the skinny little rod do most of the work.
The Rainbow and bamboo combo were so pretty I just had to try for a screensaver shot, so here it is. This pic will go on the wall at home.
Dad tends to have the worst luck on our father son fishing and hunting trips, but he busted his string of bad luck by landing the biggest fish of the day...and his 'personal best' trout.
It was a great day for our clan with three generations enjoying a day afield with rods in hand enjoying some beautiful country and fish. I should've taken some photos of the large herd of elk that spent most of the day in a nearby field eating up what I assume was wheat.
Tomorrow will be a teary day for the missus as we drop off our son for school and become empty-nesters. Thank God we'll have a new Golden Retriever puppy to keep her and our Brittany occupied while I'm at work.
