We're in Colorado dropping off our son at Colorado School of Mines in Golden and visiting my folks who live in nearby Loveland. My dad, a once avid flyfisherman, treated my son and me to a day of guided flyfishing on a ranch at the mouth of the Big Thompson River. It was a fine day of firsts and biggest...

Chad, my son, was first out of the chute after 2 hours of unsuccessful, a few hook-ups but none landed, belly-boating. He took this gorgeous Rainbow from the shore. It was his first flyfishing catch and he's now excited about the possibility of taking Flyfishing 101 as a PE elective at his college. How cool is that?

I didn't have any luck at the larger lake where Chad caught his fish and the guide receommended I didn't break out my 5wt bamboo rod there anyway as some of the monsters could snap it. When we went downstream, however, there were 'smaller' fish and I decided to break out the bamboo rod and reel my father had made for me as a promotion gift. It was handmade by the owner at Elkhorn Fly Rod and Reel in Loveland. It didn't take long to hook a nice Rainbow and I let the skinny little rod do most of the work.

The Rainbow and bamboo combo were so pretty I just had to try for a screensaver shot, so here it is. This pic will go on the wall at home.

Dad tends to have the worst luck on our father son fishing and hunting trips, but he busted his string of bad luck by landing the biggest fish of the day...and his 'personal best' trout.

It was a great day for our clan with three generations enjoying a day afield with rods in hand enjoying some beautiful country and fish. I should've taken some photos of the large herd of elk that spent most of the day in a nearby field eating up what I assume was wheat.

Tomorrow will be a teary day for the missus as we drop off our son for school and become empty-nesters. Thank God we'll have a new Golden Retriever puppy to keep her and our Brittany occupied while I'm at work.

Awesome! Those are some pretty fish. I love your screensaver shot!

I live just up the road from Loveland in Ft Collins. City is all a buzz with Parents dropping off their "new college students" here this week.

I'm glad your family is taking a little time for some fishing. And having good luck at it too. Your son will surely enjoy his time here in Colorado and I know you all will enjoy your visits with him over his years here as a student. Lots to see and enjoy.

Who knows, he may even settle here. Gun laws sure are friendly too!

Blessings, Viking Queen

Thanks for the kind comments. We're headed home tomorrow morning, but taking our time doing it. First night around Salt Lake City, then two nights in Reno (the missus likes to gamble and I like Cabela's and hear there another huge sporting goods store), then back to Travis AFB...with one full day to get a haircut, shave, and drink some wine before heading back to work.

Hugh - Sorry, but they were all catch and release fish. I do need to get my hands on a trout for almonds, lemon, and butter..mmmm.

Viking Queen - Didn't make it back into Ft Collins this trip, but we lived there for three years when I was attending CSU. It's a neat town. I did do a bit of real estate browsing and, unfortunately for us (retiring next Summer), it doesn't appear the markets here were pummeled as they were elsewhere.

Said "goodbye" to our son this afternoon and won't see him again until he comes home for Christmas. We miss him already.

Hey Matt,
Those are some REAL NICE looking Rainbows. The color and size is just outstanding. Looks like you had a great time.
I know what ya mean about droping off the kids and the long drive home. As you well know a Military way of life is hard on a family. It is REAL hard on the Parents/Grandparents also.
Take care,
Jim

Matt, That is simply awesome. I learned to tie flies in 4-H about 30 years ago. I enjoy fishing, and there is nothing better than wading a river with a fly rod catching trout or smallmouth. My dad and I have fished together, and I hope to get my sons into it. My oldest has seen how flies deliver fish when bait and spinning gear don't at the local pond. Great photos; thanks for sharing.
