I've used BullsEye (BE) for some time now among other powders.
Searched around but did not see any historical usage and the most successful usage for BE.

Questions:
  • What was BE used for originally?
  • what is the most popular and successful current usage in terms of caliber and application?

BULLSEYE has always been a smokeless pistol propellent. The original stuff was the floor sweepings from the INFALLIBLE propellent production setup and the stuff worked so well the DUPONT[yes!] company decided to make Bullseye since the Infallible floor sweepings could not keep up with demand.
It was the original 45ACP propellent and stayed that way intill U.S. ordered 45ACP ammunition from the Israeli's twenty years ago or so.
IT IS BY FAR THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF ALL PISTOL PROPELLENTS PERIOD !!!
You should read more gun history, Sir !!!
And so it goes...

Hi,

Dunno if it's THE most popular and/or successful use, but one would be hard pressed to count the number of .38 Spls loaded w/ Bullseye under a 148 gr WC that have been used to poke holes in paper in both practice and competition! I believe Alliant suggested a number well into the billions at one time...

At 2.8 gr per round, we're looking at 5 million rounds per ton, and they've been making Bullseye since about 1898. That's a few tons for sure!

I didnt know there was anything other than Bullseye powder, if you want to save money its the way to go over 2300 loads per pound at 3 grs in a 38spl.

I don't know what it was used for originaly.
The most popular application was probably for constructing .38 Spl target ammo back when Bullseye Competition was all the rage. That, and it has always worked very well for "standard pressure" loads in many pistol/revolver cartridges.

What has allways worked, still works.
I would guess that that is why they still make the stuff.

"Bullseye goes all the way back to 1898, when it was developed by Lafin & Rand. In 1902 it was switched to the DuPont label and in 1913 Hercules took over..." You can read this article about Bullseye, Unique, and 2400 powders on page 36 of American Handgunner magazine (September/October 2012). I'm not sure if I'm permitted to hawk a magazine, but if I could only get just one....

Google is your friend... sort of.

Bullseye was introduced by Laflin & Rand in 1898. Large surface area per unit weight enables rapid combustion in short-barreled handguns. Laflin & Rand began production using small, irregular particles removed by screening runs of larger grained powders. Improved manufacturing processes offered other reclamation options for reduced quantities of rejected material. Hercules manufactured Bullseye as thin, round flakes. It is believed to be the oldest smokeless powder formulation still being manufactured in the United States. It is designed for handguns and can also be used in 12-gauge shotgun target loads.
