Hi, I have a question about reloading for the Mini Thirty 7.62x39. I know I will get good information here.
Either .308 or .310???
Thank You

I won't go so far as to say that the Mini-30 once having a .308 bore is a myth, but I will say that I've never seen one which did...or known anyone else who has either. And that's coming from a guy who bought one of the first ones made.

If it'll make you feel better though, slug your bore to find out.

According to Hornaday "Foreign firearms have a .311" bore and are most accurate with .310" diameter .... ". But slug your barrel to be certain. There used to be a plastic that could be used, but I can't remember the name and can't find it.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. I don't know how to "slug" a barrel. Help me with that please. Thanks again.

Hello again, I went online to Yahoo and saw a video of Slugging a rifle bore, I also went on the Ruger site for their Ammo recommendations, which is military or commercial, store bought. I have a box of Winchester 7.62x39 which measure at the neck of the cartridge .310. Hornady's reloading manual says on page 510 " Ruger's Mini-30 has a .308" bore". .308" bullets can be used. it also says accuracy is also achieved with their .310 diameter bullets.
Wow, I found my answer.. Thank you Guys.

In all due respect, no you didn't find your answer. What you found was Hornady's answer. My money says that Hornady is wrong about the size of your Mini-30's bore being .308...but like has been said, if you want to know for sure, you'll have to slug it to see.
As for Winchester's choice of bullet size for their 7.63X39 ammo...that is not an indicator of any certain gun's bore size, it's just the number they picked. On a similar note, I've measured Winchester 30-30 bullets which were .307, and Winchester .30-Carbine bullets which were as small as .3065...just sayin'.

Hope this helped.

I'd suggest you talk to a gunsmith about the cost to slug your gun. If you cast bullets there are online video instructions and you need a good mic. The plastic I was thinking of is an epoxy used for making precision molds it runs $300/liter and is fairly toxic.

Gentleman, Thank you! I reload for a few other calibers without confusion, this Ruger Mini Thirty with the 7.62x39 cartridge is a challenge. My supplier said he was under the impression that Ruger made their barrel .308 to align themselves with the American marketplace. Yet their (Ruger) owners manual says Military or Commercial ammo is recommended. I have put .310 as well as .308 thru the rifle without incident, how I would like to be certain of which is best. Thanks again.

Gentleman, I slugged the barrel and it measures .310. I took a picture and if I knew how to do it I would post it.
I'm taking the slugged .31 lead ball to my machinist to be sure I'm measuring correctly. I put 2 balls thru to be certain.

I had it properly measured and .310 dia is correct.

I really appreciate the feedback, this forum is one great sourse of information on things Ruger.

Just a hint for slugging a barrel; use a slug that is min. .010" over the predicted groove diameter. If you used a .310" ball, and got a .310" result I would suspect there is a faux pas somewhere...

FWIW; I haven't heard of a 7.62x39 barrel to be .310" just .308" and .311" and larger...

5/15. I was paging through a "Rifle" magazine at the market and noticed an article on a new Mini 30. The bore of a new production Mini 30 is .308"...

Thank you for your post, New Production? My Mini Thirty is 2013-2014? I used a .31 cal ball to slug the barrel, 2x.
My caliber measured .310, I took the two slugged balls to my supplier who measured with a micrometer .310.
I also have read that the barrels being made by Ruger are .308. What confusion!!

A friend collects AK47s. He has measured from .310-.314 most are .310/.311. Both he and I keep seeing .308 for the 7.62x39; however, there are no specific manufacturers nor models-in fact source attribution is absent!

To the point. Try both and see which works best. Start with .308 and then see if there is any improvement with .310 bullets. If there was any danger I'm sure Ruger would say so. I suspect the barrel is... heck I don't know. :D

Try a .315"-.320" slug. Using a .310" ball and getting a .310" measurement makes me believe the ball/slug was too small to totally fill the barrel...

True, but if a .310" ball comes out at .310", the bore darn sure ain't .308", and is at least .310. .311" is starting to sound like a good guess.

Gentleman, I'm going to the range tomorrow, I have plenty of both .308 and .310 loaded. I hope to see some difference between the two.

I understand the question but, feel why does it matter. Going the the range may show some shoot better maybe not. I think those two diameter differences will not make any or little different and either will work. So, let's hear the results of your range day. Good shooting!
