Bird watching

I have, for years, been watching a couple sites with birds. I watch a peregrine falcon site: https://chesapeakeconservancy.org/what-we-do/explore/wildlife-webcams/peregrine-falcon/
, an eagle site: https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/ , and an osprey site. At present the eagles and falcon are sitting on their eggs. The osprey are building their nest. Nita and I are avid birdwatchers. Years ago if you'd have called me that you might have had a fight on your hands. My mental picture of a birdwatcher then was a man clad in short khaki pants and shirt, pith helmet and binoculars around his neck. And knobby knees to boot.

But we have two very good bird locations nearby, Waponocca NWR and Reelfoot Lake. And we have planned vacations round National Wildlife Refuges. That has taken up to Idaho, Texas, and Florida, with many other places between.

I’m not a birdwatcher but I certainly enjoy watching them. A couple feeders and bird houses in the backyard. I also like seeing the osprey and eagles as I boat along the rivers in the area.

In a couple months the Conawingo eagles will be fledging. Lots to see up there. Bring a camera

My wife feeds all kinds of animals in our back yard including birds. She has 2 of these large Hummingbird feeders that attract so many of these things it looks like a beehive at times.

She put the feeders out day before yesterday and we've already seen some of them coming back.

One of my youthful memories is being in a car with an adult relative, and him saying:
"There's an owl in that tree." Only one I have seen in the wild.

I'm just wrong today. I was thinking of the other type of birds. But of note, there were quite a few on Malibu today.

My problem with birds is when they crap on my car, which I work hard to keep clean. We feed them all winter and this is how we are repaid? Still, I love to watch them. Eagles on down to sparrows, fun/interesting to watch. 8)

Back in the mid 1970s when my dad retired, my mother no longer had the 'freedom' to use tobacco as she pleased. (She'd claimed to have quit years earlier, but never did...) In an effort to outsmart Dad, (No small feat), Mom took up bird watching so she'd have a reason to go wandering in the fields and woods out of range of dad's disapproving gaze! (Dad said she'd come home smelling like Joe's Pool Hall from her 'walks in the woods'!)

Mom became an avid birdwatcher, even if she never did quit smoking. She really threw herself into her hobby, and in a couple years she was as well informed about birds as the Birdman of Alcatraz. ;) She never fooled anyone about her smoking, but we all WERE impressed with her acquired knowledge on the topic of birds. There were bird reference books all OVER the house.

Dad had quit smoking in the early 1960s, and for his efforts he died in 1988 at 66 from a defective and badly misdiagnosed heart valve. Mom continued to smoke AND birdwatch for another 10 years before the tobacco devil got her via a massive and fatal stroke. The old girl took a lot of bird knowledge to the cemetery with her!

Gotta add the black, over the calf support stockings, and you've painted the perfect picture, Bob! If it's not the perfect birdwatcher, it's certainly the epitome of a fashion faux pas. Or was that Bob Hope in one of the "Road" films?

I have never went out of my way to watch them but I do enjoy it when I get the chance. I remember sitting on a deer stand at dusk (a bit before full dark) & all of a sudden seeing a limb move quickly to one side & the spring back. I couldn't see what made it happen. So I picked up my scope & looked only to see a small owl looking back at me. I also remember a time my old hunting partner & I were driving out of the woods & stopped to look at an owl about 3 feet tall sitting on a limb. Both of those incidents were in Merriweather County, GA.
Last year we saw a young red tailed hawk in our yard several times. A few weeks ago I watched it bringing twigs & leaves to a structure it built in the oak tree in my front yard. I tried to get pics but the Oak is about 40 yards from where I was & I didn't want to go to far out into the open & push it away. I thought it was building a nest but I haven't seen it since. It has me wondering if something happened to it or what it built was for another purpose. I honestly don't know enough about them to be sure. It is always interesting to get to observe Gods creatures.
