Bicycle Tires

HI,

Once upon a time we stocked about 10 27 x 1 1/4 tires for every other size we carried in our shop. Then the industry started the move to 700C for road bikes and hybrids, which is just a tiny bit smaller in diameter. Most of the "variety" from everyday commuter to fast paced club riding to certain kinds of racing is now done in the 700C size, with a lot less variety in the older 27 inch size. So if you're looking for a good everyday "I just want to go for a ride" tire, Kenda's probably at the top of the list. You may also find a Sunlite (sp) brand, which I'm pretty sure is a rebadged Kenda. Continental offers a couple of more performance oriented tires, as do some other brands.

If it's been a while since you've bought bicycle tires, be prepared for sticker shock. A few years back, the yuppie crowd really did a number on bicycles as utility items in favor of status symbols, and it's reflected in tire pricing now, too. I get most of my tires from biketiresdirect.com these days.

I’ve seen the Kenda name, but don’t know the quality.

Continental makes good bike tires. I’m approaching 1,000 miles on the set I bought from Amazon and they are still in good shape. They are probably good for another 500 miles.

Check out Amazon, looks like the size you need is $28 per tire.

It's been a few years since I bought tubes and tires. Last time I did, there were many quality and price choices.

But, seemed they were all made in China, regardless of brand or price. And this was from a real bike shop.

Has this changed? I'm gonna have to go take a look.

I don't do "bicycle" but will pass this along. Last month I found it necessary to replace the rear tires on my UTV. The previous 2 sets had been "heavy duty" 6-8 ply tires that failed just as readily as the lighter/cheaper tires. This time I went with cheap to see if "cheaper is better" (OR at least as good) and KENDA was the lowest cost option delivered to my door.
What I noticed is the KENDA is really thin and doesn't have much of a bead. Even compared to OEM type Carlisle tires, the KENDA tires appear flimsy and thin.

I use Kenda on my 3 speeds, I am a 200 pounder, they have held up for me, make sure you get ones marked "Made in Taiwan."

Just replaced 4 tires with Bell Flat Defense tires and Duro tubes. Weird thing, the tires came all folded up packed in square boxes....... :?

I also have noticed that bike tires made in Taiwan are usually very good quality.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 1980 Nishiki International which has been gathering dust for about 25 years;I want to do some riding again. I ordered some Kenda tires/tubes/strips from the bay, hoping for other than PRC-manufactured.

We ride bikes alot when in Florida. My biggest complaint is the tubes. Just garbage.

Hi,

Over the last 15 yrs or so, I've used Specialized, Kenda and CST tubes. CST is the current incarnation of Cheng Shin Tire which might be more familiar in the motorcycle world, and, yes, I think they're PRC made.) I haven's seen CST on the shelves in a while, but they actually were the best value of the three brands mentioned. Specialized are good, but you pay a lot for that red "S" on the box. As I mentioned about tires, Kenda makes a good knockabout product.

I haven't used any of them yet, but Schwalbe tires and tubes enjoy a good reputation. They're pricey, though! Wait, make that PRICEY!

I said earlier, I've found all bicycle tubes and tires to be made in China. I wanted to prove myself wrong, so I just took a look. I didn't buy this tube because it was cheap, as it wasn't. I bought it because the dealer said it was a good tube.

Got me thinking. Wondered where the tires on my mid-level Taiwanese (or so I was led to believe) bicycle were made. Couldn't read the fine print on the tire, so I turned the bicycle over, only to discover...

American companies sneak in their outsourcing to unfavorable (to me) countries when they think nobody is looking. When I looked up country of origin on Electra Townie bicycles, here's what I read, in part...
The new Electra [bicycles]...manufactured by a Taiwanese contractor...

So when my dealer told me my bicycle was Taiwanese, he just didn't know that the country of manufacture had secretly changed.

gee, wonder what my 1970 Schwinn continental is worth these days? tires must be dry rotted by now. been hanging on a hook for 50+ years. lol.

There is a market for refurbished Schwinn bikes. Decals are easily available, and a 50-year old Chicago-made Schwinn can look like brand new. And some are not cheap.

And since I sidetracked the thread, just a little, to get back on track, I'll agree. Your tires are probably rotten.

I do know that Continental has been making bicycle tires longer than most anybody and all their premium brands are still handmade in Germany. I used them when I was a kid on my bikes and I also bought Continental tires for my motorcycles when I was older.

"Continental has been making bike tyres for 149 years and it has developed a lot of its own bespoke technology along the way. Its premium BlackChili tyres are still all handmade in the German Korbach HQ, while more affordable Performance grade tyres are made in its own Far Eastern factory."

Cool thread! I have a late 70's Schwinn I bought new and havn't ridden in about 35+ years. Until this thread I didn't have a clue what brand of tires to buy. I also have 2 kids bicycles that are about 25-30 years old that will need tires for the grandkids. Sounds like it could get a little expensive, but it will be fun getting them ready :)

mine has the factory optional spoke click odometer, optional wheel generator light pack and early metal toe clips. man I was the cats meow in the neighborhood.
