Best Ruger Oil!!!

I recently ran out of Hops #9 oil, and had some left over BMW fully synthetic 5w-30 engine oil. I refilled the bottle with the BMW oil, and used it to oil my Sr22 a few months ago. I just went to the range, and shot 300 rounds. When I got home, I field stripped my SR22, and realized that the barrel and slide rails still were wet with oil. I have never previously found wet oil pistol that had hundreds of rounds though it. Fully sunthetic engine oil works great, lasts long, and is 15 to 20 times cheaper then Hops gun oil. (Let the debate begin!!!)

I use Rem Oil and some Tetra Gun Grease on the rails. Works well for me.

Its funny, when I got my first handgun I was looking into cleaning products wondering which was the best. All I heard about was Hoppe's 9, over and over again I heard it. After using it over the summer in my EDC I can confirm is is a very fast evaporating oil. I take my pistol down every two weeks to reoil, and it does fine if you do that. However it is not for the person who may pack up there pistol 3-4 months at a time before shooting or maintenance. In short, if your going to the range the next weekend and do a pre cleaning and lube, its fantastic. But don't trust it over about the three week mark, most of it probably won't be there anymore.

Currently I have gone to using a combination, both grease and hoppes9. About a 60-40 split favoring hoppes9. Depending on the part. Most of the parts in my fire control group still get hoppes, the barrel lug and the sides of the lug now get grease. Top of the slide where the barrel rubs gets grease as well, along with the rails.

Hoppes9 now goes only outside the barrel forward- of the lug, fire control group, light coat inside the barrel, magazine springs and body of the mag. I use clp on the external of my slide to keep the finish protected. Everything else now gets grease.

I've used synthetic motor oil to lube guns for years, works great as you found out.

Also works great in revolvers.

I use mobil 1 on the works, synthetic grease on the slide rails.

Rem oil... only lube I've used. Hoppes solvent to clean it up and Rem oil afterwards.

TW25B synthetic Grease. It stays put, Synthetic motor oil will have additives but should and does work fine but if you carry the gun grease works better.

I've wondered about that. I'm almost out of Hoppes oil and I was wondering if it was really any better than 3n1. When we were kids that's all my Dad ever used too.

I use M Pro 7 and white lithium grease. If you're in a LGS and buy a small tube of white lithium, it's about 7-8 bucks. Go to Home Depot or lowes get a tube- bigger than toothpaste! for about 4 bucks. You can do all your guns 10 times and then slick your steps to keep your mother-in-law away.

Shooter's Choice FP-10 has always been a favorite of mine. I mixed up a recipe for AR lube I found in a gun magazine and it's been working well with my AR and I may try it on my semi-auto hand guns as well.....
The FP-10 runs a little on the dry side and the AR lube runs very wet.....

I started using G96 when I got back into shooting a few years back. I had always used Hoppe's years ago and when I asked at the local gun shop they said they used the G96 and they had some private label water based solvent for hard to clean spots. So I bough some of each and have been happy with the results. I do like the smell of G96 over Hoppe's.

Unless you are going through large quantities of oil/cleaner I can't see making home brew for the few dollars a year in savings.
