B17 Flyover

Just sitting here a minute ago checking out the posts when I heard those engines. I new right away and as I looked out of my back window the B17 flew overhead heading for Galveston I suppose. I really love seeing those old planes in the air.

Every year or so a B-17 and B-24 are at a local airshow. When they come in and leave they usually fly in formation. Pretty neat as a local bunch who fly AT-6's usually flies as escort.

I live about a mile from the Millville airport, known during WWII as the Millville Army Airfield - a major training base for P-47 pilots bound for Europe. Vintage aircraft often stop by there. Yesterday, I heard that unmistakeable, thunderous roar, and ran outside just in time to behold the wondrous sight of a B-17 pass overhead slightly above treetop level, followed shortly after by a B-24, also flying low and slow. I had tears in my eyes! What an honor, just to see them.

Those B-17's where some tough old birds, my father flew as tail gunner in one.
He would tell me stories of coming back from a mission and counting the flack holes in the plane.

I was leaving work near NE Phila airport and saw the unmistakable front view of a B17 coming in on approach over the road...

Last year, the "Memphis Belle" was parked at NE Airport for a few days.

Of course, so was the "Minion Blimp" a couple years ago, too.
