AR15 forum?

Did not know where else to put this.

I have plenty of Rugers, also have an two AR15's an Armalite and a Colt. Both 100% factory stock heavy trigger & all. At the range yesterday the Armalite was consistently failing to lock bolt open on the last round. Same magazines & ammo as used in the Colt which runs flawless.

BTW ammo was 55 grain Remington. Stock Colt 9 round mags.

Anyone suggest a good/friendly AR15 forum I can hash this out in? Thanks.

First thing I would do is this

Take the Buffer Spring from the Colt and put it in the Armalite and try it.
If it still does it put the colt buffer with the colt spring in it and try it
If that doesn't work check out the gas tube for debris also the gas carrier key on the bolt carrier for debris
Now pull the bolt out of the carrier and check to see if the three gas rings are staggered if the gaps are in line you won't get the proper pressure and that would cause it to not push the bolt carrier back far enough to lock it open

Also try some mil-spc ammo Remington is a bit on the weak side

AK Files forum has an AR section. The guys there are very knowledgeable but sometimes a little harsh.

Yes, tread lightly on AR15.com

What's the issue with ar15.com, please?
Everybody on there is an expert. And if you don't believe it, just ask them.

(Actually, several of them really are, but good luck picking the wheat from the chaff.)

Exactly. Everybody knows more than you do and I've never seen a forum where folks are so quick to cannibalize their own/attack members for various inquiries/questions.

OK, I've got "some" experience with the AR platform.
If the rifle has been working and now doesn't, try pulling the bolt, clean the gunk out of the carrier, lube the gas rings and cam pin track, and re-assemble. While you're at it, squirt some solvent into the gas tube allowing that to run inside the tube and piddle out into the barrel. Failure to lock open on an empty mag on a previously functional rifle is normally the result of either lack of lube on the BCG or partially plugged gas port/tube. While the bolt catch can be stiff and cantankerous,it usually frees up with use and seldom reverts to it's stiffness unless foreign material/rust builds up in the spring recess. There are some mags that simply don't lift the bolt catch enough to lock open. I have several of the Colt 5/9 rounders that are "well used" and none lock open with ANY lower.
Swapping parts between rifles won't tell you much except one set of parts may be slicker, looser, or better lubed than the other. It is possible that debris in the buffer tube is hampering full travel of the buffer and spring but this doesn't happen often unless you're toting the rifle 24/7 in some nasty environments.

To froggy47... Is the Armalite dirty by chance? I've had semi-auto's fail to lock the bolt open on the last round simply because of crude build up.

As to the AR-15 forum, I went there a few weeks ago when I first got an AR-15. All sorts of bickering and negative sarcasm back and forth. And as pointed out, everyone is an expert. I was afraid to ask a question for fear of being insulted as a newbie. So yea, I can come here and get good answers to my questions without the pretense of snobbery. How's them apples? AR-15? Nope, not for me....

The “black rifle” section at Glocktalk is pretty good. Lots of knowledgeable people, and generally stays very civil.

Thanks all you guys, I probably haven't shot this gun in 10 years, so very few rounds , but it could be the lubes have gunked up so I'll give it a good cleaning/lube and will also try some proper 5.56 ammo to start. I registered on ar15.com, but I really like this forum (meaning the advice/info you all offer) .

:)

Then perhaps try moving some bits between the Colt & Armalite. I have some other mags to try also.

Ar15. Com won't let you use a free email account either, so that was enough to keep me out, I would try a good cleaning and a magpul magazine, I've had same problem with thermol mags, so I took them out of my rotation, some rifles can be picky about their magazines

That's pretty funny. Sigforum, domain of a hypersensitive, overbearing, juvenile and obtuse moderator/owner who goes by the name of parabellum. Anytime that bozo interjects an opinion into a thread, anyone who disagrees is reprimanded and threatened with suspension. Whole other forums have been formed by sigforum members who got tired of Packwood's incessant, infantile bullying. I'm not a member but I check in a couple times a year just to see what's what, and he hasn't changed.

I think he's getting worse, whatever his emotional disability. Paranoia? Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Who cares? "He be nuts!"

OP, you've got good advice on this forum. These guys know guns, and not just Rugers.

Hmm, FWIW I used a 20 year old free hotmail account.

Well that was my conclusion also, it's just that there was no sub forum for the AR platform. In any case, not getting much from AR15.com.

Thanks all.

Thanks all.

This forum: https://thefiringline.com/forums/ has been of benefit to me in different subjects.

Also, this forum: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php

Both forums are micromanaged, but for straightfoward questions like yours, can be helpful.

I see someone has had some poor experiences with SigForum.
Not I, however.

Particularly, within their rifle room, I have not witnessed that at all. Maybe, it's because Para realizes he's not omniscient concerning long guns.

In a couple other sub-sections, I've witnessed the disagreement ban hammer come out. But most often, due to some idiocy a member has created. It's his site, And he runs a tight ship.

Concerning arf.com, I haven't logged in there for probably 5 years. Too many "operator" know it alls. Way too many BS rules, all designed to piss you off.

My experience on glocktalk was that several sub-sections feel like arf.com...many tactical operator wannabes.
