Any remington 742 experts here?

Hello all, I am rebuilding an older remington 742 as a little project. I have torn the gun down, replaced all the usual stuff, and was just going to get a ram-line synthetic stock to replace the beat up wooden one. However, after a little research I learned that in 1975 remington changed the action bar design and newer manufacture stocks (forend) won't fit.

My question is- My gun is a pre '75 example. Is there anything I can do about the action bar problem? Can the ram-line forend be modified? Can the action bar be changed out to a later version?

I'd look around for a nice real walnut forend. Maybe haunt Boyd's until they make a few. Nothing like nicely-grained walnut, and the nice thing is you've got it to seal and finish as you please (or just epoxy-paint the existing one for that tacticalist look?).

- Remember the 742 is a bolt-action. it is actuated by gas bleed-off, but is still a turn-bolt closed breech rifle. Float that barrel and releive the fore-end tip from contact and there's no reason to not have the accuracy of any similar-length bolt gun!

I have seen this warning on about a dozen sites that I have looked at ram-line stocks for sale:

Remington M-7400 , 742 Model 4 and Model 750 Ram-Line stocks will fit most of these models.
Not made for the Model 740
Made for the M-742 made after 1975 only. Serial numbers after A 500,000. Must have Letter before serial number to fit properly..
Remington made a design change in the action bars in 1975,.Went from a thicker, wider bar to a nore narow profile bar. The Current forearms will not fit the older series.
Standard stock bolt from the Wood stock will fit. The Stock bolt for the factory synthetic stock is longer than the one needed for the Ram-Line stock set.
Standard stock bolts are avaialble for sale.

My serial no. is 7116xxx I bought it new in 72 or 73---Natchez has the stock set on their website and doesnt say anything about only fitting certain years.I would take a chance and order it.Or call Ramline and ask-you cant be the only one to put one on that year gun.Good Luck
