Grabbed some very old reloads; can't remember what the recipe was, but this 33-year-old Marlin 1894 sure answers the mail...

Great! And somebody at the Marlin factory knows how to lay out a stock blank--put the "pretty" part far away from the wrist of the stock. I bet you actually could KILL something with that ole' .44!

It's walnut (not maple).

I'll see if I can find the load. I know it's a lighter cast bullet (maybe a 200 grain?), and I am going to guess I used Bullseye powder. I loaded that ammo more than 20 years ago when I was shooting falling plate matches with my Model 29 handgun.

I also have a bunch of swaged 240 grain Speer bullets loaded over a near max load of 2400; those shot terrible in the Marlin. I'm going to load those bullets over either Unique or Bullseye at lower velocity just to use them up. I don't like swaged bullets at all.

This 1894 rifle showed up on the used gun rack of a local sporting goods chain (Turner's) for the princely sum of just $350, and I grabbed it as soon as I saw it. The older Marlins are really good rifles. I'm a wood freak, and I know this one was considerably above average. It is a lot of fun to shoot.

I have a few other Marlins, too. I like them a lot. I also like my Rugers a lot (which is why I spend far too much time on this board, I guess).
