FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) -- Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in a deadly late-night shooting, sealing the downfall of an athlete who once had a $40 million contract and a standout career ahead of him.

A classic example of "How Dumb Can You Be ?"

A lot of those guys would not be classified as mental giants to begin with. Combine that with huge $$$ and fame, and watch them come off the rails. He's not the first, although he's among the worst.

A local boy, who really was intelligent and graduated from college with a business degree, and also happened to be a great football player, played professionally for one year and left pro ball voluntarily. He now makes huge dollars as a financial advisor to NFL players, and doesn't get his body beat up every Sunday.

And the whole thing started over a spilled drink in a night club. 3 dead. Him in prison for the rest of his life. Awaiting trial on two more murder charges. He should have just stayed home that night and played Madden!

I wonder how much of the behavior was aggravated by excessive use of performance enhancing drugs. Specifically testosterone.

I've not been following the story, but am aware of it. The guy who bumped him got killed, someone who might not be able to keep it quiet got killed. Who was the 3rd one Aaron will be tried for?

Hey, sometimes we can't keep up with all the political doom and gloom and we need something refreshing... :)

they pay these scum an inordinate amount of money to PLAY A GAME! Those of us who save their pathetic lives when they mess up, don't even come close to their salaries. Then there are teachers, and other helping professions. Our society is SICK!

I know that's the popular thing to say and I don't disagree completely but the NFL generates 1 billion dollars of revenue. There are exactly 1696 players in the NFL at any given time. So as far as the players are concerned there are less than 1700 of them helping to generate over a billion dollars of revenue. They aren't exactly "low skill" laborers in that even the worst NFL athlete tends to be very skilled. The players salaries are capped per team and generally the best make 20-25 million per year. Which by numbers is roughly 0.5% of the players. I believe the average length of an NFL players career is 4 years. I would be hard pressed to come up with a legitimate argument for why the top ~10 employees in a billion dollar industry shouldn't be making good money.
Now is it sad commentary that a game is generates that kind of revenue? (and that's not even counting gambling and secondary revenue for business in and around the stadiums) Yes I agree with you 100%. But numbers wise, there is no reason they shouldn't be making that much. It's just sad so many of them become millionaires at 22 and 23 and end up broke by 30.
