Accuracy of convertible .22LR/.22WMR

I was looking at a post in the Ruger's Collectors realm. There was a comment about Ruger changing the bore size of early Single Six's to "accomodate" the .22 Mag cartridge early on when Ruger went to the convertible concept.

I have a fixed-sight convertible New Model Single Six purchased new in 1999 to practice CAS single action revolver shooting in my basement. I have never been impressed with its accuracy using .22 LR cartridges.

Do any of you all have accuracy issues with your late Model convertible Single Sixes using .22 LR cartridges. Are they more or less accurate with .22 WMR cartridges?

I have found it depends on the individual gun. This, of course, does not rule out the possibility that I handle certain ones better than others.

I suspect it is on an individual gun basis also. My OM 22lr that I fit a mag cylinder to shoots well with both. Same point of aim. I suspect at the effective range I can hit my target with the 22lr there is not much advantage to the mag except I can use solids. Chief aka Maxx Load

At one time in my life (looooong ago) I might have been able to actually use the extended range capability of the .22 Magnum . . . but of course at that time I could still see the sights clearly.

By some happy quirk, my OM SS6 puts a LR exactly where the top of the front sight sits at 25 yds and the .22 WMR same thing at 50 yds (depending on velocity of mag ammo)

I never could stand the mags in my 1980 vintage 5 1/2 inch adjustable sight gun.It does minute of sqirrell head with the lr cylinder.

I've seen this question come up before and decided to go to the horse's mouth. Since inaccurate firearms don't interest me, Ruger's response will keep me away from convertibles.

Are the bores the same diameter for a .22LR and the .22WMR? Are the chamber mouths the same diameter?

.22 LR is .221/.2225
.22 mag is .224/.2255
Our Single Six convertibles are a .224/.2225 groove diameter.
We do not have the specs for the chamber mouths.

Looks like I'll need to sandbag test my SS at 25 and 50 yards using both .22LR and .22WMR cartridges. I've never been happy with my SS .22LR groups.

You can always bump up .22LR ammo to bore size with Paco Kelly's Acu'rzr.

A trick that helped silhouetters that had Single Six's was CHEAP ammo. Of coure there are other issues to deal with when using cheap ammo, but the quality controls on some of the cheap stuff must allow it to be a little oversize.

Generally though even with it's oversize bore the gun shoots better than the shooter.

I'm glad this thread happened. I, also, don't always experience the accuracy that I hope for, with my convertibles, and I've been planning on buying the Paco Kelly tool, since forever. This caused me to send him a check, today! :lol:

Get a B-square single six scope mount. The ones that use the rear sight screw hole and the front sight screw hole. See if the barrel ines up with the scope base.

I have had several single sixes and the ones that shot the worse had the barrels screwed in crooked. Ruger has some real issues getting thier barrels screwed into thier frames straight.
