Is the Maverick 88 simply Mossberg's answer to the Remington 870 Express: take a well proven design (the 500), cut out some of the cosmetic costs, and sell it for a bargain price? If so, it should do well in the "working man's" market as they describe it on the website.

Agreed. The 500 is no 870, but it's definitely an honest, serviceable weapon that might be the best value in gundom. And a good used one is an even better value.
